Organisers had said they expected more than one million people to attend the event.

    Seriously?

Awful news, sort of puts things into perspective really...

Think I heard on the news that it was 1.3 million people at it this year  Terrible news saw clips of it on tv and it looked horrible seems they got panicked in the tunnel and that caused the stampede.

Youtube and Ustream were both streaming the event today and up until about 6 or 7 they were both still going. Both stopped after that and were replaced with 'Our wish to arrange a happy togetherness was overshadowed by the tragic accidents today.'

Weird that it continued after what happened but I suppose you don't want 1 million people leaving at the same time. Sad. Apparently it's at least 15 and some places are reporting 17 or 18.

They felt that they had to keep it going for fear that it would cause further panic if they stopped. Imagine what would happen if the PA systems started relaying that information. I think the best way was for the bad news to filter through the crowd, thus lessening the possibility of further panic.

If I was at the gig and heard the news I wouldnt stick about... so tragic.

    Really sad news.

Some acts cancelled I think, Boys Noize did anyway. I never actually knew it was such a big festival.

YEA THATS TERRABLE NEWS R.I.P. TO ALL WHO PERISHED & MY THOUGHTS GO OUT TO ALL THAT SUFFERED & TO THE FAMILYS WHO HAVE SADLY LOST SOMEONE :(

My friend texted me about this last night it's just awful.
I was told it was cancelled though?

Anyway the number in attendance is usually inflated. 2008 was put at 1.6m when in reality it was around 750k. Still better than any crappy rip off festival I've been to here! I just hope it's not the end of it.

According to Sky News the organisers have said the event will never take place again. That's a shame as well.
From what I can gather there seemed to be just the one entrance via tunnel. If this is true it's a very obvious hazard.
Also the comments from eye witnesses paint a very harrowing image.
"My boyfriend pulled me out over the bodies, otherwise we would both have died in there. How can I ever forget those faces? The faces of the dead."

Now 19 people dead and 342 injured  my heart goes out to them

After a disaster like this it wouldn't be right to try and have another Love Parade, while it's obviously sad that there will never be another love parade but given these tragic circumstances it's understandable, some reports are saying the organisers are being blamed, no doubt there will be a massive inquiry into how this happened.

It's very tragic indeed, RIP to one and all,as dance music fans going to something like this would probably be the ultimate experience and instead it's turned into the ultimate nightmare.

yeah especially in the 90's the love parade used to have over a million people on the streets of Berlin (it's no longer in Berlin which was it's spiritual home)

In all my years Raving amazingly ive never been at the love parade, after this disaster it will never happen again and while that is sad given the tragic circumstances it's totally understandable.

Was at it in 08 in Dortmund. The scale was just unbelievable with after parties that would completely blow you away. Def up there with my best clubbing experiences.

This just goes against the very essence of what the festivals about.

I was at this in 2008 and it was pretty well organised, in a different city though. Pretty bad decision to have everyone enter through a tunnell though. I doubt there was 1.4 million at it either but still a huge crowd. I was watching the live stream until about 6pm myself. From watching the live stream there seemed to be a motorway right beside the main stage which was closed. Why they didnt allow people to use this I dont know.

Hopefully this wont be the end for the LP, although it was having difficulties before this. Was cancelled in 09 because Bochum felt they couldnt handle the amount of people expected to turn up and I think there was lots of meetings with city council etc this year before it got the go ahead.

Motte was angry for a few reasons but one was the fact it was no longer kept open. Excessive use of barriers. Do you remember the inconvenience of the distance they put on us? Not to mention the lads dragging down one at 12 and loads climbing over before security put it up again.
That could have been dangerous and we said it at the time.

Ummmm.....I dont remember, but I dont doubt you. I dont see the need for fencing anyway. The roads were all closed around the event so once people are in that area it shlould be clear to move wherever

I dunno, they could've closed it down earlier than it was due to close. I understand why they wouldn't do it straight away, but to continue to the end is just wrong.

I don't know how any of the acts could've played their sets after they'd been told what happened. Some of the clips showing some of the acts hopping around the stage late into the night are in serious bad taste. How early did news of the deaths filter out?

very sad for 2 reasons, one of course the lost of lives of people that were basically out to have a good time, and secondly that the event will (probably) never be held again. maybe a few years down the line.

on another note, i hope this lad wasnt in charge of crowd control.

I was at the Berlin Love Parade in 1997. We'd gone from Koln (18 hours on various trains) and got there early on the Saturday afternoon. We'd a great day but the trouble started when we tried to leave. We thought we'd be smart and get the first train in the morning leaving Berlin, when we got there we thought the rumor had spread that the Russians were coming.

Although we were told it was the biggest platform in Europe, the platform was clearly overpacked. First train came in , which was to Hamburg iirc and passed us by nearly 400 meters. There was a bit of a silence until people realised they could be waiting hours on the next train and started jumping onto the tracks and running to the back of the train, getting in windows etc. When this hapened people started pushing from the back of the platform so everyone ended up on the tracks. I seen people get trampled on, pulled off the train, punched, kicked and this was before the police got involved. It took nearly an hour for them to sort it out. I really thought someone would die.

We got talking to the Police and they told us that they expected it to be like that for the rest of the day, we stayed in a friends apartment in Berlin till the Tuesday and then made our way back to Koln.

Although the crowd at the Love Parade is always a good one & there's very little trouble in terms of violence, the shear volume of numbers meant that an incident like the one that happened on Saturday was always likely to happen.

RIP to all those who passed away.

was in berlin for the parade in 2006 and we were lucky enough to be staying in an apartment right beside the start of the parade near the brandenburg gate, about 7pm we deceided to head back to the apartment and get some food and stock up on booze before heading back down to the victory column.on our way back to the parade, maybe around 9pm we met loads of people heading in the opposite direction and they were telling us not to bother going any further as it was bedlam down at the victory column, fights breaking out all over the place and glass bottles flying through the air, that sort of ****.
seemed to be a LOT of really really really drunk russians/poles kicking off.
but as for crushes etc,it was an amazing site seeing that amount of people but it was all good in so far as there was loads of room for people and people were spilling in to the tiergarten park.
duisburg was a bad idea from the word go it would seem.

defo something im glad i went to and always suggested to people who were up for a bit of divilment.

RIP 20 victims,RIP the Love Parade.
