I was looking at a car today for my sister that had power assisted stearing but it felt very heavy at low speed.

Is there any difference between 'power assisted stearing' and 'power steering' or are they one and the same?

It was a 99 Seat Arosa (VW Lupo basically).

It was fine out on the road but when I pulled into the dealership and went to park it seemed quite stiff.

I had a pump go on me before.it was ok when driven fast but when i stopped it went rock hard.but when stationary if i reved the engine it went light again (untill the revs dropped again);)

Ps-stupid question time_are you sure it has power steering??

Can it be turned on the spot with one hand?

Yea, it has power steering alright.

Mickdw, I didn't actually try to turn it on the spot with one hand but I'd imagine it would have been very difficult to do so.

In fairness to the guy in the garage, he was giving a 3 month warranty, said that he would do the timing belt and give it a service. He might do the power steering pump too, if that is in fact the problem.
