Repeat confusion

    I'm repeating a few exams next month and I got this email, does anyone know what it means? I'm in second year commerce going into third year next year.
    Dear Student,

    It has come to my attention that you have received personal examination timetables for the Autumn examination sitting which you might require some guidance on. I believe that the Autumn examination timetables include compensatable modules. Please note that students with up to 10 ECTS of compensation will not be permitted to repeat these modules. Students with above 10 ECTS of compensation may choose which module to repeat to bring the compensatable credits down to 10 ECTS.

    Please see regulation below:

    Students will be granted a concessionary pass in modules to a total of 10 ECTS credits in Second Year and 10 ECTS credits in Third Year; the concessionary pass shall be effective at a mark of 35% in the 10 ECTS credits in question regardless both of excess marks in other modules and whether or not other modules need to be repeated. Students with up to 10 ECTS of compensation will not be permitted to repeat these modules. If students have achieved marks of 35 - 39% in more than 10 ECTS, they must repeat the excess compensatables and will only be permitted to repeat any compensatables above 10 ECTS. The student must choose which module(s) to repeat.

    You gotta love rules and regulations, dmcg90!
    Ok, I’m not in Commerce, but I’m going to hazard a guess at what this means and you can tell me if it applies:
    (1) You have failed at least three subjects, with each subject being worth 5 ECTS respectively;
    (2) Your marks for these subjects are within the 35-39 range, which could be described here as the compensatable range;
    (3) If you had only failed two subjects (again, I’m only guessing that each are worth 5 ECTS), you could have gone straight into Third Commerce. That appears not to be the case;
    (4) If you have failed only three subjects, then you will only need to repeat one of the three (and gain a clear pass of 40%+) provided that you have between 35-39 in the other two subjects (these will trigger the pass by compensation overall if you pass the subject you choose to take in Autumn and pass it). You have free choice on which of the subjects you want to resit in Autumn provided they were all between 35-39 during the first sitting (First or Second Semester sitting)
    Does that make any sense? Feel free to post a scenario (be creative, if you like) and we’ll work it outJ

    I'm not in the compensation region for any of my repeat exams, they are all around the 25-30 mark. 4 repeats.

    Okey-dokey, well then I guess this is what they mean:
    (1) You have to repeat the four subjects and have no choice in the matter;
    (2) You don’t necessarily have to pass all four subjects to progress to Third Commerce;
    (3) You will, however, need to get a clear pass of 40+ in at least two subjects, and get within the 35-39 range at least in the other two subjects;
    (4) Obviously, the best scenario would be to get a clear pass in all, but I guess this is what the information you received means.
    If I were you, I’d of course double-check with lecturers/classmates that this is what it means. I’m in Arts, but we have lots of lovely regulations also!
    Hope this helps ;)

    Well, im in first year law and repeating two subjects in August, thing is the results and registrations n all that happens after teaching begins? Whats the story with that? Like if i feel confident about the exams, do i just stroll into second year law classes? ha

    The overlap between the release of results and the beginning of term is hugely problematic and really quite unfair on repeat students, to be honest. As you'll have seen, term for most students (barring First Arts) is September 6th, while results, according to Exams Office website, are released on September 8th.
    I guess all you can do is pop in to classes as confident as you can be after the repeats, and then find out for certain on the Wednesday.

    Agree with this so much. Had to repeat one exam last autumn and spent the whole start of semester worrying about it! Oh and as far as i remember, even if you pass, you wont pick your new id card with the rest of your classmates, only after the results have been issued!
