Compared to my Android phone and Macbook. So I'm guessing this is a problem with the ipad software.

Buffering takes ages and I really just forget about using the Youtube application.

Anyone else having the same issue??

Try viewing www.youtube.com in Safari on your iPad. It should redirect automatically to the HTML5 mobile site (if the iPhone is anything to go by). There's been reports of better quality via the site directly compared to the app.

Works super here too. Sounds stupid, but try turning it off and on again by holding down the button on top for a few seconds (once for off and then again to turn it back on)

It could be your broadband. I'm on Smart telecom and of late it's gone crap an youtube can be dreadfully slow at times. Take the iPad out and about and check youtube on some free wifi spots, this'll give you a better idea.

Video quality shouldn't be affected by the delivery method of the data. It would be slower to load and maybe jump lag or glitch but the quality should be the same.

I agree but I've used it on 3g and the video plays at a lower bitrate.

according to gizmodo they say the same thing, also that netflix videos look as bad as youtube does and abc player doesn't work over 3g.

    more here as well:

Not true. The You Tube player ( which uses a standard API) recognises what kind of network it can attach to and will ask for the lower resolution, actually it can do this on the fly - the resolution should get better if you move from Edge to 3G and from 3G to WiFi.

Mine is also terrible even watching HD videos it's very fuzzy

I've got a 16GB Wifi iPad, and video on the YouTube App is terrible. It takes about 10 minutes to stream a 3 minute HD video!!! It can't be the network, as the same video streams in about a minute on my laptop.

Haven't tried accessing YouTube yet via Safari on the iPad.

This happened to me and it turned out our new house alarm was connected to the phone line and slowing down the connection considerably. It's worth investigating.

Thanks for the feedback. If there was a problem though, would the streaming not also be painfully slow on my laptop? At the moment the problem is only on the iPad.

Yeah, I guess so, but it was slower on my iPad than on my mac. Now it's zipping along. It's got to be the wifi. Take it out to a free wifi hotspot if you know of any and give it a go there. That'll sort it out once and for all.

In fact you MUST deliver a lower bitrate over 3G or apple won't approve your app.

Yeah, my next step is to do exactly as you say. Given the quality of some of the wifi hotspots in my vicinity I think I'll have to try a few. ;)

So i've tested playing YouTube on 3 different Wifi hotspots and streaming performance is terrible on all of them. One thing I've noticed is that the videos I'm having most problems with are HD videos. For example this video runs for 2mins 51secs. Using the iPad this is still streaming after 25 minutes, and has more or less stalled after having only streamed half the content. When I try to stream the same video on my laptop (using the same Wifi network) it takes 2 minutes to fully stream.

On the other 2 wifi networks I tested on, I was not able to improve on this stream time using the iPad.

    Baffled:confused:

My IPad is fine for YouTube, iplayer, tvcatchup on both 3G and wifi.

I've just watched in with no problem, my wifi speed was 2.36 Mbps. Download a speed checker app and see what sped you're getting.

I think know the issue now. It's a Wifi issue and I've just been unlucky as the other 2 Wifi spots I tested must be as slow as mine.

Here's my theory. On the YouTube website when you play a video there are a number of options for video quality i.e. 240p, 360p, up to 720p. On my laptop all videos are defaulting to 360p. I've done some research and it appears that the iPad YouTube App, defaults to the highest level of quality i.e. 720p.

So on my laptop I've tested the video I mentioned and switched to 720p. I am able to replicate the performance that I experience on the laptop.

This suggests the problem is with the Wifi and not the iPad. Still though it would be good if the iPad YouTube app allowed you to specify what quality you want to playback. Hopefully there will be a future enhancement.

I just did a speedtest on the laptop and iPad. I got a download speed of 428 kbps on the iPad, and 144 kbps on the laptop (I'm currently connected through my work VPN).
