Hi i've just started the red plan on daniels running forumla, previously i was doing 3x3km a week at around 11.5kmph which was fairly easy.

So this week I've done the following

    sat 5km e pace

sun tested my heart rate by doing 1mile E pace warm up and then the threadmill test

    mon 40 min E pace

    wed 10min E pace, 3x (1mile T pace with 1 min rest)
    only managed 1 mile T pace and then 1km T p and then 1 mile E pace.

    today 10min E pace 6x (1k T pace with 1 min rest) managed 3 x 1k at T pace and 1mile E pace

Here's my question, when i did my threshold run on Wednesday my hear rate was at 92% but when i did the same today it was at 70%,how is there such a huge difference? I even ran a bit faster today to try get my heart rate up but I couldn't.

    digme,

First of all Heart rates vary! If you are low on water, it will go up at the same training intensity (pace, if you will). If you are depleted of sugar, it will go down. If it is hot or you have too much clothing on, it will go up at the same intensity, too. If you are nervous, it will go up because you are high with adrenaline. If you are overtrained and run hard, your legs may feel it but your heart rate may not be high enough to show you that you are straining because you are not producing adrenaline due to adrenal fatigue.

When using a HR monitor always use common sense and go by feel too. Working at 92% of your max for tempe/LT stuff is too high. Also make sure you know exactly what your max is before you set paces from it.

For the threshold stuff, there is no reason why you should not have completed all of the workout. You must have run way too fast or you were a bit run down that particular day. These type of workouts are usually done in the 80-90% of max HR zone so shouldnt feel tough but comfortably strong running.

Didn't realise a lot of that would case the change, especially the adrenaline that's nuts.
Anyway I'm kind of freaked out now, I just got up to 223 HR awhile ago while doing strides at the end of my 30min E pace run and the funny thing is I think there's more to go.Is this a bit strange?
