Any idea what weight that is? I find that some are a good size, but can weight around 3-3.5kg. The Argos one is 2.5kg afaik. When you're packing to 10kg, it all counts.

Also has it passed the Ryanair cage test?

Weight: It's on the link the OP posted.

Cage test: It's mentioned in the OPs first post.

You'd be surprised what you can find out if look closely

There are a few nice wheeled cases in Dunne's stores, €19.99, passed the cage test as Ive brought one on-board myself. I don't know the weight but it feels very light. Good value

Looked at this case on www.argos.co.uk where there are many reviews.

Some reviews state that there are different types of cases for this number, while some of them have passed the cage test, some have been outside the size.

The suit cases are back in stock! Just got one in Liffey Valley earlier today. One left in stock there. Price online is €10.99, but in store is €12.99. Got it for the lower price :)

Also for anyone interested in the aforementioned Bush speakers, I got a set in Jervis SC. Fantastic value at the price. Used them on a recent break and they were perfect for what I needed.

the biggest problem with these cases is the weight of the case usually a quarter of the allowance is used up.

There's something in the description I don't get....
    # Size (H)57, (W)39.5, (D)18.5cm (when handle fully extended).

    # Size (H)50, (W)38.5, (D)17.5cm.

So, when the handle is extended, the height adjusts............... but so does the depth and width? Maybe that is a glitch on Argos.ie?

FYI, Ryanair's allows cabin baggage with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Thanks for the link, OP, as I've been looking for a bag like this for a while :)

Nope.. I reckon that could be right.

If the handle has a notch at the end that right-angles outwards, it could easily add on a centimetre.

    Kinda like this..

    vs+luggage7a.jpg

    .. but this angles inwards!

The bag is 100% Ryanair passed. By that I mean I've been through the sizing cage no problem. Latest trip was 3 weeks ago.

The weight is excellent for a wheelie bag. I've never over stretched the 10kg limit with a full bag anyhow.

Believe me, get this bag, and you'll be laughing in the face of RA and their expensive carry on bag!

PS Sorry for ranting on about this bag, but I believe it really does represent good value.

Yes, it does happen, mine was weighed the last time I flew with Aer Lingus

It would appear to be happening more often on the homeward bound leg of the flight. In Italy the Ryanair sizing cage actually has a weighing scales built in. In Alicante they have a separate large weighing scales at the boarding gate. Believe me, they're used thoroughly too!

LOL, that's cause people are just buying them up without thinking twice ;). Probably way more readers of these bargain posts compared to posters.

Subscribe to this thread. If they come back in stock again I'm sure someone will update the alert.

not with ryanair, their turn-over time for flights is too tight to worry about the size of the bag or weight. just once you have just the one bag and it doesnt look too heavy, its grand.

Hmm, that's not my recent experience at all.

RyanAir do have the time to check carry-on luggage. Why? It's impossible to board everyone at exactly the same time. The leading passengers boarding will require a few minutes to get seated. This offers an opportunity for a number of cases to be checked.

On recent flights I've had bags checked for both size and weight. I've even seen some people having to dump gifts at the boarding gate so that they are within the size/weight limit (they had them stuffed into their carry on).

Perhaps you've just been lucky, but I wouldn't fancy having to dump a bag that isn't within the RyanAir baggage restrictions

Very good bargain alert. Thanks for that.

I have seen Ryanair weighing carry on bags only twice and some serioulsly pissed of 'customer's' dumping gifts and/or having to pay more

fair enough. any time i have been on with them, they dont check. ive seen people taking the piss with bags that are obviously to the naked eye >15KG even though the limit is 10KG. most bags would never fit in the measurement bars either, including underweight bags.

in my experiences, they dont have much time for the picky things. Aside from the usual protocols, the plane only gets a minimal tidy inside and they board passengers asap.

Yeah I've seen them weigh hand luggage numerous times in various different airports, so wouldn't take the chance with anything I value.
Our check in bags were overweight going abroad this year & they weighed our hand luggage before they'd allow us to redistribute the weight. We went from a €160 charge to a €20 charge thank god cos our hand luggage was not very heavy.
My friend bought a teddy for her little girl last year in the duty free & she was told that she'd have to leave it behind if it didnt fit into her hand luggage. Other times though I've seen numerous people get onto Ryanair flights with 2 & 3 bags, but unfortunately you just don't know which flights will be strict & which won't.

What a bargain! Only €8.99 now. I checked the website and surprise, surprise, it's completely out of stock in all of the Dublin stores.

If anyone is successful at buying one elsewhere, just post here & make us all jealous!

Dunnes Stores have a decent carry on trollybag for about 20 euro in red and black. It has two useful outer zipped pockets, and bigger one of same can take small laptop, handy when have to remove same for security check. It also has extra zip that allows for expansion of whole bag. But if you use this feature, it will NOT fit in the 'milk crate' type measuring device they make you put it in to check for size. But you could wear your coat etc for vital check area and then later 'expand' the bag to store it.

Not disputing this but haver travelled with both Ryanair & AL alot recently and have never seen any scales at boarding gates. Ever. ( Obviously if you are checking baggage at checkin there is a chance that they will weigh hand luggage also but only taking carry on with online check in, i've never seen anyone getting weighed. Sized yes, but no scales ;)

Agreed. Never (yet) seen any weighing scales OUT of Dublin. However, since Ryanair staff already weigh carry on bags at other airports, I believe it's only a matter of time before they do same in Dublin.

Anyhow, heavy out => heavy home ;)

Does anyone know if the argos case is still in the new catologue and what the ref number is?

Also can you check a bag in to bring only one way with ryanair?I'll have hand luggage going over but coming back I'll need to check in a bag

Not sure if booked as a return flight. If you haven't already booked then do it as two single flights rather than return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭annieoburns

You can add in a bag at any stage prior to day of travel and pay per leg of journey I think. There is a feature somewhere on website to add in the extra details after original booking is made, eg maybe wheelchair needed.... 'manage booking'?

Just a note to everyone. I was passing through Stansted over a week ago and the Ryanair staff were very aggressively seeking out bags that might not fit into the cage for the £35 charge. There were two Ryanair staff as you come to the Ryanair departures gates after the long walk from security picking out passengers to put their bag in the cage, in many cases they would not fit so the passenger would dump some packaging etc or put on a jacket that was in the bag to reduce the bulk. There was no weight checking, just all whether it would fit in the cage. When you got to your gate for boarding they were checking again.

This carry on baggage malarky is starting to get difficult because I was on a fullish flight and they had runout of overhead cabin space with a lot of people still with carry on bags. The cabin crew offered to put the bags underneath, no charge, but you would have to wait for the bags on arrival, which kind of defeats the purpose of the carry on bag in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭annieoburns

Yes agree with previous poster about problem of over head stowage capacity. I frequently travel solo and am of the habit of waiting to board last, sitting quietly til queue is gone.

But lately many of the planes seem unable to take 'carry on' bag except lying down widthways. I thought previously you could fit your bag in like books on a shelf. There was thus some rationale in the specific size contraints dictated.

If this is the way they want to go, they should remove some seating like on a train and provide extra stowage. This might suit some with bad backs, kiddies in tow etc.

I would imagine the weight issue is something else for them to coin in as people can still buy weighty bottles of drink if they can stash in their bag.
