Hold your breath until I tell you to exhale.

    Start now.

Drink a glass of water upside down, always works, I have made many people do this with a very high success rate, basically put your head between your legs and tip the glass of water into the pallet of your mouth, always works, I guarantee it

Exhaled after long breath holding - it seems to have worked, despite your apparent attempt to kill me.

That actually sounds like a stutter, not hiccups.

    Hiccups gone.

    Breath holding worked.

This is possibly the best thing ever that has happened to me from boards.ie.

    I love you guys!

Yep, the drinking out of a glass backwards thing is the only thing that never fails.

Except that many people can't manage to actually do it for some weird reason...

    Juggle flaming chainsaws.

Doesnt cure it, but should take your mind off it.

    95% success rate.
Just do it over the bath or sink or jacks or something.

    Chewing gum.

Always worked for me. About two years ago I quit smoking and used nicotine lozenges to ease the pain. one of the side effects, strangely enough, is hiccups. SO i got them a lot, and got to experiment with the various cures.

most of the common cures worked now and again but the one consistent one was chewing gum.

    Have a cigarette.

    Have a cigarette.

    Always a good idea.

But seriously: the holding breath thing worked for me, first time.

    This also works a treat,
Focus on an object for 2/3 mins and inhale and exhale deeply...... it actually works :)

I had hiccups for three days once. Gave me an insight into what life in Guantanamo Bay would be like

I was there for a while.
Told a few people on another site that I was in the process of planning an attack on New York that would make the twin towers attack seem like nothing more than a fireworks display.
****er reported me. One extraordinary rendition later and I was being penetrated by a broom.
Cuba isn't a great place at all.

Pherekydes' solution worked for me. Tip - ignore this part...
until I tell you to exhale

... or otherwise you might die.

But it worked. It really did.

The 'holding your breath' way never worked for me.

I heard a great one from a HomeEc teacher years ago. It's a bit weird but strangely it works!

Put your fingers in both ears, take a deep breath and then drink something for 5 seconds. Works like a charm, every time!

counting to ten slowly but loudly, taking deep breaths in and exhaling while saying the number. Kinda forces your diagphram to stop having a spa attack. Saw this documentary once where a guy had the hiccups for years but they found out it was a brain tumour pressing on the part of the brain that dealt with respiratory functions. Scary.

9 mouthfuls of water without breathing, it's the cure ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

Hold your breath is by far the best way. You need to inhale as deeply as you can. Then when you think your lungs are at capacity, force yourself to inhale more until your diaphragm can't pull your lungs down any further. This way the diaphragm can't physically spasm to cause a hiccup. Hold this for about 30 seconds and the hiccups will be gone, 100%

I did that once and I felt like my lungs were going to burst.

I got the loudest hiccups at work one day, all the lads were laughing their heads off at me. I mean really loud :(
Had to run and hide!! I find holding my breath and then breathing very slowly and deeply for a few min works

Knock back a teaspoon of vinegar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭Demeyes

Think about your next hiccup, really think about it and it won't come. You focus on it until you don't have hiccups anymore! It's worked for me a few times.

    Step 1) Go to www.***onparty.org

Bite into a slice of lemon...

The drinking a glass upside down worked the first 10 or 11 times but when I got used to it, it no longer worked.

Apologies for the slow update, but I am delighted to report that I am still alive and hiccup-free thanks to holding my breath for as long as I could.

As this was the first thing that was suggested, I can't vouch for any other solutions unfortunately...many thanks everyone!

    for future reference

    http://www.cognitial.com/hiccups.shtml

I found this years ago and have never had a problem with them anymore

Hiccups are caused by the spasming of the diaphragm, this method stops that.
