I am going to splash out this weekend on the Canon 70-200mm f2.8. Any recommendations on who to get it from - bricks and mortar or web shops? Price as ever is important!

Not every shop will carry this lens so online might be more practical.

Keep in mind that there is a VerII of this lens which is very desirable.

DigitalRev is one recommendation ~ bare in mind that online stores outside the EU may not be charging VAT & duty ~ you will have to pay this separately.

Your title says f2.8 II IS
so crispins reference to the other thread is not quite identical

    Had a quick google
Canon lens prices are quite competitive in ireland at the moment due to the sterling and the dollar rate
Best price I could find in dublin online was:
€2499 in Berminghams for the new version

    http://www.berminghamcameras.ie/store/index.php?target=products&product_id=4045

This compares very well to uk prices
    Dearer in Conns
    Try Gunn's

My boss bought me mine in ISS. And I was not complaining about that :D

If you buying online, consider Kerso too. He ships from Scotland and his prices are lower than those UK retailers on camerapricebuster.co.uk. He's also on ebay as Flash Camera.

He last quoted me "Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS MK II" for £1849 + shipping. He normally delivers using DHL. That's off ebay price btw.

Fully recommended based on my experience.

    +1 for Ian. I paid £999 for my MK1 70-200 f/2.8 IS.
Got a €100 rebate on top of that.

Another vote for Ian Kerr. Email him for current price list on kerso1123 AT msn.com

Exactly the same here! 2 years or so now, lens has risen sharply since but I assume it'll now drop what with the mk II version out.

So what's the difference between the MkI and the MkII - apart from price?

They both have IS and both are f2.8. They're both "L" series so presumably the glass is spot on.

From the review I read on DPreview
    http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_70-200_2p8_is_usm_ii_c16/
and their numerous posters the lens is incredible, sharp even out to the corners (not that I'd notice that diff but they r all pixel peepers over there)
and totally sharp as 2.8 wide open.

Even if I had money I wouldnt't upgrade, way too dear and I seldom use even my mk I version, I love the lightness and ease of use on the f4 version.

The MK II has the new 4 stop hybrid IS.
The MK I only has a measly 3 stop system.

When has anyone needed the 3 stops that a mk1 will give you ?

I'll probably get the new one ('cos I like shiny new camera stuff) but might test it first and then decide.

Barker Photographic in Cork were recently doing this lens (MK1) for €1,200 ex VAT, which is a great price from a local supplier. Not sure of stock levels. Website here - http://www.barkerphotographic.ie/

I was also looking at that lens but due to the recession I'm now looking at the sigma 70 -200 . Doesn't look too bad. Anybody have one?

70-200 f2.8 IS MKII is not worth the price difference over the MKI ...

now is a good time to get the MKI , which is still an excellent lens,

no way is the MKII that much better ...

If I had the money I'd go for the mk II version, like everything else its all about the market driven forces.
