Hi,To some this may seem as a dumb question, but can someone please explain to me what a scratch cup is and the different types of scratch cups? I have been playing golf for ten years and have always wondered what they were.

Basically, a competition where the person that shoots the best gross score wins the biggest prize, a trophy or "cup".
There are several different categories of Scratch Cups:
Senior Scratch is for those that play off 4 handicap or less... scratch golfers and plus handicap guys.
Junior Scratch is for handicaps 5-9
    Intermediate Scratch is 10-18
    Minor Scratch is for 19+

Most of these handicap limits are the ones you'll usually see but sometimes a Junior will be 4-9 so it's not exactly set in stone.
Also, some will be held over 36 holes (on the same day), some will be 18.
Prizes can vary too - some only have gross prizes and some will also have nett prizes on the day.
Usually they are good value and the course should be in top order.
36 hole ones often include a lunch between rounds.

Another thing, if you play in a 36 hole one, your handicap gets adjusted based on 2 individual 18 hole rounds (as usual). So you can have a poor first round and be out of contention overall but still get cut from round 2.

If there are gross and nett prizes, say 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each, the 3 best gross scores win the 3 gross prizes (obviously) and then the 1st, 2nd & 3rd nett is given to the guys with the best nett scores that haven't already won a gross prize.
