Casual Golfer - How do I calculate my handicap?

    Hi there,

Im a casual golfer, not a member of a club as I only get about 6 - 10 round in a year. Im fairly hot and cold on a golf course, im as likely to scratch index 18 as i am to par index 1, on average i scratch 3 holes per round and will get approx 4 pars, mostly bogeys and a couple of doubles.
I tend to start slow and hit decent scores on the back 9.

In work we have an informal "Golf Society" where we play about 6-8 rounds over the summer. Our group has about 6 golfers with GUI handicaps and 9 or 10 golfers with no handicaps. As a result every year there is arguments over the casual players handicaps, especially for the last tournament of the year when ther is money/prizes at stake!!

This year i have decided to put a system in place to calcualte the casual players handicaps.
Does anyone have a simple calculation i can use?

Looking at my own handicap, i usually play off 18/19/20 and below are my scores for this year:

    Course HC Score

    Limerick Co 18 31 points
    Howth 20 39 points
    The Curragh 20 41 points
    Mount Wolsely 20 28 points
    Grange Castle 19 32 points
    Holystown 19 27 points
    Corrstown 19 26 points

    Anyone care to help?

    Cheers!

    Course|HC|Score|gross
    Limerick Co|18|31 points|13
    Howth|20|39 points|19
    The Curragh|20|41 points|21
    Mount Wolsely|20|28 points|8
    Grange Castle|19|32 points|13
    Holystown|19|27 points|8
    Corrstown|19|26 points|7

Looking at that, your best is 41 off 20 which was 21 points gross, 15 over 36 points.
Assuming you handed those cards in to me looking for a handicap (and assuming SSS of 36), you'd be off 15

When a club member is officially getting a club handicap they will submit 3 cards and generally your best front 9 and best back 9 is taken from the 3 cards.

Any score over a double bogey reverts back to a double bogey and when added up you subtract the course standard scratch and it should give you a rough estimate.

If for example you shoot 90 you take a standard scratch of 70 away you would be a 20 but as you have said your scores are quite inconsistant. If they gave you 20 and you had 41pts like the Curragh they wouldn't be happy but if you had 27pts like Hollystown they wouldn't mind;)

From looking at your scores you should go with 18 and then adjust it each outing if necessary.

There is a few of us in work have our own system set up, based on the handicap system. We all started out on a particular handicap that we felt suited us (we were all around low 20's). Everytime 2 or more of us play together it counts for our handicap. We use no buffer zone. If you score 35 or less, you drift .1, if you get 36 you stay put, and if you score higher than 36 you get cut .3 for every point your over it. Its working well for us, but its not a society as much as 6 friends who play together, so there is no banditry.
