Scottish Wedding

I have to go to a Wedding next week in Scotland. All of the guys that are heading over from Ireland are wearing kilts. We have been trying to get a straight answer on the whole "whats underneath the kilt" thing. Most of the Scottish people we have spoken to, say nothing on underneath, some of the younger Scottish people say you can wear something underneath, an older friend of my Dads (pensioner) says you can't wear anything and its an insult if you do! Either way, we are not bothered and will go with what we have to. What's the general consensus? Or does anyone know for definite what the line is?
    Thanks.

Surely it's a case of doing what you feel comfortable with?

I have heard the same things you have as regards what to wear underneath a kilt... But in my opinion I would put comfort before tradition cos in the end who is going to lift the kilt to check? :)

How are ye deciding who wears what design of tartan (hopefully with matching nix :))?

IME some Scots may take offence if someone wears a kilt they are not "entitled to" as I discovered having taken the trouble to get togged out for a Burns night in Edinburgh many moons ago.

It's all a pile of poo started by Queen Victoria, but just bear it in mind.

Any weddings I've shot in Scotland, they've never worn anything underneath.. I've the photos to prove it :-/

I've worn one myself and went with it. It's not that bad...

    Yeah, you think that now...

I am wearing a kilt for my wedding next year and only had my first experience of wearing one a few months ago.

I would say wear whatever you are comfortable with. If it was me I would wear underwear, especially if it is a hire one, I might think slightly differently if it was my own. Also having been to a few weddings in Scotland not everybody will be in kilts, but depending on where it is quite a few people might be.

It is possible to get some generic tartans that are just designed to look nice and are not really aligned with any family or meaning

There are a couple of options open in terms of kilts - I've managed to find a company that makes kilts and I have managed to find my own family tartan (I'm leaning towards having it done and it would be a nice heirloom), also there are a number of kilt hire companies in Scotland that do a "Spirit of Ireland" kilt - its like a generic Irish Tartan. In terms of the Scottish people being annoyed and not Scots wearing kilts, we were asked by the groom and had no problem with it.

Lastly, I reckon it has to be when in Scotland do as the Scottish do - tweeds off!!!

As a Scottish person, I have to admit it sounds strange that an Irish person would wear a kilt just because the wedding is in Scotland. But maybe the Irish have their own tartan.

The reason the Scots wear kilts to weddings (all the men will be wearing theirs to my wedding) is to wear the family tartan, kind of like a badge. "In the olden days" they would have been worn so you knew who was your enemy, and who was your friend!
I wouldnt expect anyone who wasn't Scottish to be wearing a kilt to my wedding, so I'm really just curious why you'd wear one if you're Irish. As for what you wear under the kilt, that's a Scottish secret :)
