Hello All - I would really appreciate advice on the following. I have a 99 golf tdi which makes a shuddering noise when i approach lights or am about to stop. I brought it to a garage who informed me it was the anti shudder valve was fault but there were unable to fix it as couldnt locate exact area of fault. I then brought it to another garage who said the valve was fine and there was probably an air lock in fuel but he wasnt sure. Has anybody an opinion on what to do. Am i better to go to a Vw garage and if so are they expensive. I have already paid two mechanics who both seem unsure of problem. Its a 99 car so i dont want and cant afford to spend much money however i would like the problem resolved. I am based in dublin but would travel if someone recommended a good garage. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had a '98 110hp Golf with the same problem. Its an ECU fault and a common problem and It gets worse over time. I remember that a mechanic I used recommended that I take it to an ECU repair specialist.

It never got bad enough to bother me however and I sold the car on with the fault.
Some TD 110s had a problem of stalling while coasting to a standstill from about 15 mph in neutral. The cure was to replace the ECU, but if the car was a personal import out of its 12-month pan-Euro warranty, the owner had to pay. This problem now seems to be coming back on high mileage TDI 110s. VAG acknowledges a fault with the ECU (038 906 018 BM) and specifies an upgraded unit (038 906 018 GQ) at £695.00 + VAT. According to VAG technical, this problem will eventually occur with all ECUs of this part number, so a second hand part may only be only a short term cure.

Some TDI 110s suffered a low-speed running problem which could only be cured by a modified flywheel and inlet manifold and in some cases a re-chipped ECU.

Get it scanned by somebody who has vagcom and you can take it from there then.

The two previous mechanics who checked it both plugged it into there computer systems but both had different faults. Does anybody know an ECU specialist in dublin area. Thanks for all your replies

Heaps of info from people in TDI specific forums. I dont know if any fixes or tests mentioned are something you can do.
