In the mail applet, is there anyway of changing the mail client from evolution to thunderbird?

I currently have the indicator applet and the thunderbird launcher on the top panel and would rather have it as one.

There's work in the form of an extension to add indicator applet/libnotify support to Thunderbird. Take a look at this blog post.
