NCT fail "Primary Structure corrosion"

    Hi guys

I got my car NCT'd this evening and it failed on this,

    ITEM
Bodywork (38) Primary Structure corrosion on 1 of the door sills (under the rear passenger side door). Basically there is a 1 inch rusted hole, and another smaller hole maybe 1/2 inch beside it. I never spotted them before, the car is 13 years old though. The NCT guy said I need to get it welded, everything else passed first time and it's just a visual recheck so doesn't cost anything more.

I poked it a little with my finger and the rest of the structure around it seems sound. Anyway what I am wondering is, do regular mechanics do this work? Or is there specialist places. Also does anyone have any idea of a rough estimate for this kind of work? And does anyone have recommendations for somewhere to do welding around Dublin 15 or West Dublin?

    Thank you ;)

cant do that, they have to inspect the work before primerd or painted. There gonna wanna see the steel

I wouldn't call under a door sill as "structural", it would be more superficial.

If structural sections of the "chassis" had corosion as described by the OP, the NCT should have written the car off.

Thanks for the replies, I'll call into a few garages tomorrow anyway. I don't think I'd attempt it myself ! Too near the fuel tank.

    Its connected to the chassis!!
    Chassis can be repaired.

If the car is Monocoque, the strength of the car is in the shell, and to be more precise the box sections. The sills would be a major part of the structure.
BUt as you said if its strength is in the chassis I dont think its structural.
What Car is it OP? :)

Hmm, it is just a visual recheck afterall, if the quotes for welding are too expensive it might be worthwhile. If it means anything to anyone, the holes look like where somebody put a car jack in the wrong place and damaged the sill. There's absolutely zero signs of rust/corrosion anywhere else on the car.

    Where would I buy fibreglass filler/isopon ?

    Any factors.

Again if the NCT requests welding you might be as off getting it done in any good body shop with a mig/tig plant.

I have got away with patching fiberglass / isopon on rotten wheel arches, under door sills and doors in the past but made sure that the job was well disguised before the DOE. (Mine was chassis so it was not structural)

any motor factors but i wouldnt advice to go tat route!! it will more than likely fail again, just bring it into ur local garage and they'll be able to sort it out! if u want to go the cheap route just cut a piece off an old wing or body panel out of a body shop, drill a few hole and pop rivet it on, a bit of sealer and it'll pass, but make sure the rivets are visuable as otherwise it'll fail

And just for ppls information tat the sill is not structure or that important, in the event of an accident cars have been desgied to channel the energy from impact away from the Safety cell ie. where the passengers and driver is. The sill takes the most of the engery and passes it back to the boot floor away to saftey!!

p.s sorry for the spelling + grammer mistakes!!

You cannot Isopon a Structural area, youd be wasting your time, it wont pass. Just get a patch, As said its a hours work, if that.

It might also help if the op removes any carpet, plastic trimming etc around the floorpan sil area and also make sure that there is no wireing etc that could get damaged. This will save time and money on the mechanic having to do it.

lad you didnt have the same problem as the op ur givin wrong info and bad advice! and you cant 'disguise' filler if its for a retset and was ment to be steel!!!!

Hi Kildare.17hmr, I read your post today and I was wondering if you could introduce me also to your car mechanic so that I can get a quote to repair my car following failure recently of the NCT test due to corrosion on the sils of car, a nissan micra 96. Thanks and look forward to your reply. You can also send me a private mail if you are allowed on this site. I'm based in Stillorgan Co Dublin but I'm willing to travel to Kildare.
    Thanks
    Cornabuille
