Applying for a different job, same company

    Okay, I'm back again.

Background is social work. My qualification came through last week, need to register with the UK council which can take anything from 8-16 weeks. If you have a pending job, the process may be sped up. You cannot work as a social worker here without registering.

Applied last month for a care work job, figured it would be something to tide me over until registration came through. Got the job, gave all my details, and was told I would probably start mid August-September (pending timing of the police check; can't work without that either).

BUT.. got home today and spotted a job for the same company for a newly qualified social worker to start September. I'm keen to apply, as reckon my registration would be through around the same time as I start work as a care worker.. how should I go about it tho; ring HR and explain?

It's basically applying for a job when I haven't even started the other one.. the care work job is considerably less well paid and i just saw it as a temp job when I applied

    Hope that makes sense..

    Advice?

Assuming they are both permanant positions, and your skills etc meet the requirements of the newer position, I would contact HR and ask if there was a possibility of taking the other role.. They may be willing to talk to the manager etc.. and replace your original position with second on the list (as interviews will have already been done etc.).. Which in theory is you were both suitable would save them a lot of time and hassle with the hiring process. A lot will depend on the size of the company etc.

On the other hand, they may realise that thay have spent time and money to hire someone into the original position, and you are looking to leave at the earliest opportunity..

Me? I would ask, but be careful with my choice of words so they see the value in hiring me into the new position (I dont think anyone would worry if you point out the extra pay and that it is much closer to your qualification level as the reasons for the request.. which seems to be the case), and don't focus on any potential negatives.

    Your call... Best of luck.

Thanks Welease. Position I have gotten already with them is locum work and the annual rate is 15k, working in a community house, wheras the social work position is permanant, full time and starts at 30k for unqualified which is great. I'm just rubbish at confronting these things!! I need all the advice I can get!!

Well, there is a serious difference in the roles and the compensation package.. Any person would understand why you would prefer the more permanant role.. and so will their HR department. HR have the best interests of the company at heart, and despite rumours are generally normal human beings, they will understand . ;)

I would give them a ring, explain the interest in the new position, and let them make the decision.. No one would hold it against you for asking.

    Best of luck..

Edit - Be aware (of course) many more people will likely apply for the 30K position, and may have more qualifications than applied for the locum spot.. So you may not get the position.. but if you dont ask, you dont get :)
