Just wondering how other people find new players for pen and paper RPGs. I no longer have acces to the fresh meat of college societies and I'm looking to get another player for a Ravenloft campaign.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Forums, mailing lists, local gaming shops should all provide possible avenues for you.

    Whereabouts are you located?

Drop into Gamers World, if you're not a regular there already. I know Tuesday and Wed nights tend to be wargamers, but some of them are roleplayers as well. There used to be a group or two playing RPGs on a Friday night, though I haven't been in on a Friday in quite a while.

There are (or at least were) also the regular meetups that used to be in Cassidys, but I can't recall where those are now. Maybe someone familiar with that will step up here and offer a bit more info.

The igaming mailing list / forum might offer you some options as well.

I've posted up an ad on the igaming list and the irish gaming forum. That games night appears to now happen in the Plough pub on Abbey Street for those interested.

I'll be putting up an ad in Gamers World later in the week.

aaaaaaages ago there used to be a weekly gaming night in the workman's club in Dunlaoghaire (the green doored building in front of the library).

no idea if its still running (I doubt it) but it was a great idea at the time. used to be three or four games going at once and the wargamers would set up in the main hall for some quite impressive battles.

Sounds great, sadly the workman's club was sold off in 2007. It's now interior design store which seems a bit soulless. I wouldn't mind getting some southside gamers together to rent a hall or something.

yea I've found that over the years most of the old RPG haunts are now gone. Allot of game soc's are gone as are the RPG Club's.

Wasn't there a group that ran vampire in the upstairs of a pub on the south quays? I seem to remember them and the IGA ran something a few years back, but as the years haven't been kind to my memory i assume they arent running anymore either.

Suppose you could always try play by Email / Play by BBS games if your in need of an RPG fix ...

The thing is I have the majority of my players already. I just think I'd like numbers up a bit more and a fresh view on things is generally a good thing.

I know the thread I'm about to post is in the same form but have you tried posting a request for more players here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055027776

Its a stickied post so it will stay up for all time until the elder admin gods decide otherwise. I've found posting stuff in this form might fade from view if the thread remains inactive for long enough.

If your looking for new blood id suggest also dropping in to one of the upcoming RPG CON's not sure when the next one is. Gaelcon is on the Oct Bank Holiday weekend. I'm sure you could accost someone into joining your group then. Better yet bring the group to a CON and ask while your there. Thats what we did worked a treat.

Yeah, Gaelcon's the next one. Then Warpcon in January and either Leprecon or Itzacon. Come to all of them!

    Really?

Cos it seems to me we have limerick game soc come back this year with a con and Sligo IT have founded their own soc as well and cork and glaway are going from strength to strength.

The only one which got merged and hasn't' run a con after that was DCU.

    I Stand Corrected.

Not really having much to do with the Hobby in general anymore as an outsider looking in thats what it seems to me. However im glad to hear things are going from strength to strength

My suggestion from my previous post still stands. If your looking for new blood id suggest dropping into a CON or two. every con I've ever been too EVERYONE who attends are extremely polite and friendly. you also have the advantage of being in a room with everyone who shares the same hobby as you.

Your bound to find one or two people im sure if you just ask around

If you not watching out for it events do pass by innoticed, guess you have to know where to look.

Cons are good esp if you get to play with someone at a con game and have a blast and then see if they are intrested in meeding up to play a regular game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Ugly_Child

I've been active on the Con circuit for a number of years now and while they are a good place to meet people. I've found people from outside Dublin tend to attend cons more. Also at cons people seem to want to get their gaming done and then drink.

    Hi all,

We would like to set a group to play Original D&D clones like Sword & Wizardry, Labyrinth Lord, OSRIC or just the Original Dungeons & Dragons. We are just 2 at the moment and we live in South Dublin.

Send me private message if you are interested! Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭shane9fingers

Never played anything like d&d, but they always looked like great fun. Although my mates would be into the social(excuse to drink) side, they'd be too "cool" to play.
How do you get started? Or is it just a matter of getting a group together, then jumping in? It seems like an awful lot to learn without someone holding your hand.
I guess I'm a little intimidated by it all, like its a special club or something!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

Joining an experienced group can help, but it's not essential.

Finding a game whose idea you like, and whose level of rules suit you, is the first step. Once you're comfortable with your understanding of the rules and background, get a few other interested people and off you go.

If you're new to everything, playing in an established world might suit you .. Star Wars, or the Marvel / DC comic universe for example.
