Questions about buying an iPhone

Sorry I couldn't be more specific in the title. I just need a few things explained - buying an iPhone over here is pretty confusing.

1.) If I buy an iPhone on billpay over here and put a pay-as-you-go sim card in it (of the same network), will it work?

2.) The sticky thread says "AT&T have just announced (19/3/09) that they are now selling contract-free iPhones." How exactly would I do this? If I bought one over there would I just put a pay-as-you-go sim card in it when I got back or is there something more complicated I need to do?

I know these are probably obvious questions that have been answered elsewhere but I just want to be clear on this before I make a big purchase.

    Thanks.

Yes, asked about 3 times a week. Do a search on "states" and you should find all the answers.

It would help if you said where "here" is? Is it Ireland or the US?

Sorry - everything that came up in my search was from last year or the year before, I thought things might have changed by then.

Also, by "here" I mean Ireland, I thought it would be assumed as such on this site. Also, I did refer to the US as "there" in my original post. Again, sorry if I wasn't clear.

    Yes.

But you will still have to pay the bill part of billpay.

    So why would you?

I mean as a pay-as-you-go phone, if I were to cancel the billpay scheme.

Surly you would be subject to a cancelation charge

Ah, okay. I didn't know they charged for cancellation, though it makes sense.

What?? Did you think you could get a heavily discounted phone and just cancel your contract at any stage

I guess I did, yeah. Someone told me that he did exactly that so I thought I'd ask. Honestly I didn't think it through.

Anyway, can anyone answer my second question about buying one in the US?

If you buy a contract-free iPhone in the US, it will still be locked to AT&T - you'd be better off buying a SIM-free one here (Irl), or in the UK, as they will be unlocked, and you can use any operator's SIM, on any tariff, and it will be worth more if you decide to sell it on.
