Missed opportunities..

Was thinking about United's missed chances after watching some Premiership years and old games.

Things such as losing to Bayern this year - if we won that, would've been very close to winning the CL. Or losing to Porto in the last minute a few years ago when they went on and won the CL.

What were you're sides missed opportunities at the big time, when they were so close and seemingly cruising?

if you're taking that (very flawed) logic, then its World Cup 2002; Ireland beaten by a very poor Spain, who lost to S.Korea (who we could beat on our day), Korea then beat Italy (so therefor we could have beaten them), Korea then lost to Germany who we had already drawn with. So we could have had a semi final decided by penalties...

    i blame mick mcarthy :pac:

    Ah the what ifs...

The Invincibles losing to Chelsea and United in the space of a week.

The same team a season earlier losing Campbell to injury in the league run-in and then completely falling to pieces.

The 06 CL final; Lehmann off instead of a goal.

Nayim from the half way line. Michael Owen & Stephane Henchoz.

All the players the club has apparently narrowly missed out on over the years (Ronaldo, Drogba, Cech, Alonso, perhaps even Terry, Messi)...

That last minute Lucio goal in the Qaurter-Finals of the CL under Houllier in Leverkusen.

It denied us the chance of a Utd-Pool semi double header.

    Drools........

Oh and Riise NOT scoring a last-minutE goal for Chelsea in the CL.

Ireland v France in Paris. Should have won, Duff had a great chance.

that Porto game still haunts me, IMO Utd would have knocked that other lot off their perches by now but for the fVckin' linesman. Porto wouldn't have won CL, Mourinho wouldn't have gone to Chelsea

    If Only :(

Liverpool's string of draws in 2008-09. If they'd only turned two of them into wins we would have won the title.

    Can't look further than Nov 22nd, 2009.

Sligo Rovers v Sporting Fingal in the FAI Cup final, should have ended the game wayy before they equalised in the 82nd minute then they won it in injury time.

Only DAYS after the Henry incident..I was crushed.

    For Ireland -

Not beating Poland when 3-1 up to let us second in group in Quaifying for Euro 92 and give England the spot instead.

Not defending a corner in last minute against Macediona to deny us place in Euro 2000.

Not beating Israel in the Qualifying for WC 2006 when we should beaten them twice.

    And well Paris

    Man United -

Sould beaten Dortmund in 1997 semi final

Had perfect goal ruled offside against Porto in 2004 which they went on to win competition

Not beating Leverkusen in 2002 semi final

For United its really being about blowing up in Europe more then League through the last 20 years

And O'Shea, and another one for Keane... The real kicker about the whole thing is, we should have won it at least 5-0 in normal time.

World Cup 2006 qualifiers - both matches against Israel.

    Euro 2000 - Macedonia away.

    Liverpool

Drawing against Hull and Stoke in 08/09 probably costing us the title
Not beating a very poor Milan side in Athens in 2007

And on the Leverkusen theme, Placente heading Forlan's shot off the line in the last minure of that semi-final putting them through.

That said given our defence back then we probably would've been hammered off the pitch against Madrid!

Terry missed penalty CL final 08 & Drogba sent off in same match, denying us a good penalty taker.

A combination of blind robbery by the referee and a sweet volley by Iniesta CL Semi Final 09 v Barcelona

    Henry - Paris, enough said.

We got cech just did'nt get the work permit. Same with ronaldinho a year before PSG went for him. Adriano too i believe.

Worst\closest for me was being knocked out of the chumps league by Chelksi that time. Depor just knocked out a top class milan team and we would would've had monaco in the semi. the closest i ever came to crying over a match. It hurt even more when chelski threw it away against monaco and porto had a huge upset in knocking another great team at the time in depor and there was the most unlikely final in a long while.

Going out on away goals to valencia and missing leeds in the semis of the chumps league. Played them off the pitch on the 1st league and conceded an away goal when we were cruising.

Being 2-0 up and collapsing at bolton and subsequently the season falling apart, you knew the boys were taking it easy after half time, pedersen you git.

But in fairness the Champions league sort of evened its way out with 2005... how well did Jermaine Pennant play that day though! Couldnt say that much more in his liverpool career though:pac:

    Donadoni - Bonner - Schillaci

Little baldy git. Bonner, you have hands, should've used them to, ya know, 'catch' the ball grr...

In fairness Italy were better side that night.

Only for Bonner we would not have played Italy in first place.

    United -

    Porto, Leverkusen and Bayern.

Losing to Burnley and drawing with Blackburn this season.

Losing to Exeter in the FA Cup.

Losing to Portsmouth in the FA Cup - if we had beaten them we would have won the treble in 2008.

not stopping Michael Thomas from d*cking on us back in 1989.

    draws in 2008/9.

one of the 6 f*ckers on the line not stopping Cantona's shot back in 1996 in the FA Cup Final.

October 16th 1991. Location Poznan. 86mins into game Poland 2-3 Ireland. Jan Urban scores the equaliser and Ireland draw 3-3.

Had we won that game we would have qualified for Euro 1992 where I am convinced we would have done great things. The most free-scoring Ireland team in history knocked out in the qualifiers despite being undefeated and scoring over 2 goals per game (unheard of for us). Pipped at the post by a quite frankly rubbish England team who were lucky to get Poland at home early in the group when they were still at 6's and 7's.

The finals turned out to be a weak tournament eventually won by Denmark who we subequently knocked-out in the next set world cup qualifiers. Basically it was a winnable tournament and we had the team to do it. All but for Jan Urban!

Very lucky in the final the season before against Celtic too, fine line between blowing up and things like back to back European competitions and an 8 year unbeaten home record.

The fact that he and his teams continually make their own luck every year has to be admired though

....****ing diving bastards Porto were that night :pac:

Celtic not pushing out the boat and buying Steven Fletcher in that January window is probably still giving Peter Lawwell nightmares

What ifs, lol. If Blackburn had beaten every team in 98/99 we would have been the first team to have a 100% record in league history, been Champions and consequently would not have been relegated.:pac:

There was no stopping him - "charging through the midfield" as I believe the commentator put it :)

Most obvious Arsenal one for me is Bergkamp missing that penalty against Utd in the '99. I'm convinced we would've won the double again that year if that had gone in - that tie was a massive momentum swing to United.

These things even themselves out over time.

Some people seem to forget that Utd. scored 2 injury-time goals in the CL final after getting totally out-played against Munich and Liverpool were 3-0 down at half-time against a Milan side that threw it away after the break. What if those 2 freak occurences didnt happen?

Every team will have what if's but that works both ways.

That was a nil all draw, and United won the replay, unless there was another occasion.

Lionel Scaloni's poor clearence, which set up Steve Gerrard to undeservedly give Liverpool an Extra Time Reprieve at the FA Cup Final in 2006.

Not sure you could say we deserved to win either Montenagro game or either Bulgaria game tbh.

Not sure which games you were watching!

I didn't say deserved. We deserved to beat only Italy.

Montenegro are poor. The conditions in the first didn't help, and the second one was essentially a friendly for everyone involved. Bulgaria, both goals we gave up over the 2 matches were rather on the soft side, and we could have scored more.

I'd say we marginally deserved the won at home and only away because of the sending off.

Agree with your Montenagro assessment but would probably point out the Bulgarians passed us off the park at Croker and we were backs to the wall in the return game once they equalised (not that there isn't merit in that kind of spirited performance).

Anyway, as you say, you didn't say deserved - just should of. Although you could use that logic for any game if you aren't going to take the actual performances into account.
