How to check if band name is already taken?

Is there somewhere that registers all band names that are trademarked/copyrighted or whatever? The name I want to use isn't very unusual but I haven't seen it being used by anyone yet.

    Cheers

Search on MySpace and Bandcamp and other such sites to see if it's being used on there?

And don't fret if it's already in use. If there are two or three other small bands with the same name as you in different countries, what's that gonna matter?

Ok, but there's no super website with a list then no? I'd be afraid that I'd have to change my band name down the line which isn't great for keeping an audience...

Of course there's a super website. It's called Google :)

Out of curiosity, what's the name of your band?

I came across this site once:

    http://www.bandnameprotection.org/

I don't know any details about the site really; haven't checked it out much.

It's prob just a site where indie bands can "protect their name" to a degree. A combination of that (or a better site with the same function, if there is one) and Google/MySpace checking should be grand.

Of course it matters what if you start to grow and gig in other countries?

Case in point for a few years there was a band called Jove, they then started getting out of the country and they very soon became Royseven and it wasn't a name change for changes sake either ;)

To the OP to answer your question theres no complete one but between Google / mySpace etc you'd be fairly covered. Music areas are split into territories anyways so you could well be called The Band in Ireland / UK and something like The Banned in the US if you get me (though most will just go with a full name change)

I must find this Google you speak of! I can't say the band name incase I go with it and it gets nicked (doubtful I know!)

    seriously, also check allmusic.com

many bands from before the internet have no web presence (And no google results, essentially) but show up on allmusic.

I'm sure there is a band already with your name. don't worry about it. Its just becomes a race then to see who's first to become superstars ha ha. I'm in a race with about 4 other bands that have videos on youtube and have a myspace.

We're winning, wrote to myspace and they gave us the original name as somebody had it but hadn't logged in in 2 years. Fair play to myspace.

Check all combinations on myspace for your name inserting your name instead of band below:

    www.myspace.com/band
    www.myspace.com/bandmusic
    www.myspace.com/bandireland
    www.myspace.com/bandband
    www.myspace.com/band official

If there's no proper one, i'd say your safe

just bumping this out of curiosity? nearly every band name has been used in some variation, would bands here check as much as possible online to see if somebody else was playing under the same name?
