    What do people think about:

In this day and age it is piss easy to get a video of yourself playing up online in literally a matter of minutes.

In my opinion, if you're a musician, you should know the basics of recording yourself. Most laptops have inbuilt cameras and microphones and these as add ons are relatively inexpensive anyway.

If you want to start a band but not fork out for an all round quality general purpose mic like an SM57/58 then it would feel like there's something askew.

Anyway, my point and question is:
If you were advertising for band members, would it not be better to have some of your material online, even a cover version to showcase your playing?
If you're serious about putting a band together why not include this, at the very least, a youtube video, so people can check you out before going to all the trouble of arranging a meeting.

I reckon if someone has a video of themselves, or wav files online for that matter (I see soundcloud being used a fair bit) then the number of no shows would reduce dramatically.

Hypothetically, if the forum were split in two, "musicians wanted ads" and "musicians wanted with material provided". ie, if you want to advertise or reply to an advert in the "material provided" section, you must provide a link to material/cover version of yourself playing. Which one would see the most traffic and more importantly, which one would have the higher success rate?

    Any opinions/comments?

    This is probably all true...

But of course, it won't happen.

I would love a split forum, as you describe, but oh well...

Why not? Sounds like a great idea. Do it mods

It won't happen because it'd be a lot more work for mods.

Why would the forum need to be split in two, people are already free to include video/sound clips of themselves if they want.

    The question was hypothetical.

If there were two sections, one where you must provide a link to material and where where you did not have to, which would get the most visits and which would have the higher success rate?

I'd first and foremost go to the material only section.

    Me to.

It's like classified ads sites, etc.:

"Only show me ads with pictures"

    that's what people want.

But it'd really increase mods work, they'd be endlessly shifting posts around...

Its a nice idea, but as peeps are saying it would create a ton of work for the mods, and we're quite busy as it is!

I wasn't suggesting it be put into practise.

If posters feel strongly about it, they'll do it themselves. Maybe it just needed the issue to be raised.

Just asking would most posters/browsers prefer to see this (ie people posting their own material with posts) or is it just a bugbear of my own?

    Make two fakes ad's:

    Drummer Wanted
Drummer Wanted - with music links (<- or something)

Then put the same text in both.

    Put links in one.

See what the difference in response is.

And then you'll know for sure

    ;D

I was giving a bit more thought to it though and this occured to me.

How about stickying a thread called "Get to know your neighbours/regulars" or something along those lines.

Everyone can post a youtube video of themselves playing or one of their tunes and others can browse them. If they like your playing/vid they can thank the post and check your previous posts/threads started to see if the person has put up any musicians wanted ads or the poster can stick up a vid of themselves and provide a link to their musicians wanted ad.

Nice way to get to know the regulars and it would be self regulating with little or no mod attention needed? I may be completely wrong on that point as I've never done any forum modding.

Hey, I had this same idea myself but never posted :p its a fantastic idea really. In one 60 second video you can see, what chops a guy has, what quality the gear is, what kind of band he would suit and, eh, if you think he looks like a douche or not! lol! I kid, I kid.
I guess it just takes a bit of guts to post up such a video, the internetz can be rough on such delicate flowers. No, I havnt made such a video myself. But if someone was to get the ball rolling.... :pac:

Well, no point talking if you can't step up to the plate.

    Me playing:

    My Music:

Senorita video is one take so that's how long it took to make. I used Nero 10 to record it. Took me maybe 20 minutes to figure out how to do it and set levels and all that.

Back when everyone was using dial-up internet, there was no virtual audition process; you had to swap phone numbers instead, arrange a meeting, play and then make your first impression there and then - though at least you got to meet the person, whereas looking at videos will never give you the whole picture. If everyone did have some “CV” to present it definitely would help some people sort through the time burglars. I think many musicians looking for a band are unlikely to put stuff up unless they think it's going to show them in a really positive light; as in, something very impressive, and if they don't have the means, they'll opt out of making a lousy video. Although they could record some performance with a web cam, most will probably opt for the “in person audition” to cover all the bases, even though, if you think about it, this takes up more time, energy and could be a complete waste of time for both parties.

bands then should do web jams-minus-the-person-they-require. Its very easy to do with a camera and a free livestream account and people dont need to go anywhere physically to watch. Plus you can record it.

    Can you recommend any sites?

I've been looking into indaband but haven't done anything with it yet.

go to livestream.com, make a studio account (they have different types - choose the virtual TV station type one). when you log in it detects whatever camera is on your machine and uses it to broadcast. Then you just put the player somewhere for people to watch. its worth experimenting with using proper digital cameras via firewire or whatever as well as web cams.

I agree. In my last band we made a point of getting all of our gigs recorded and we also used to the audio of record our jam sessions. As you say, advances in technology make this quite easy. Even a laptop's microphone will record a reasonable quality of sound. We used it to listen back over what we played and to be able to pick out parts that could be expanded on or that sounded good.

I would be a bit suspicious if, for example, I responded to an add for a bass player for a band but the band members hadn't gotten any recordings of themselves done. I wouldn't be expecting CD quality audio or anything like that, just something that shows the band actually playing so that I can be reasonably confident that the members have gotten things to a certain level.

The forum doesn't need to be split in two in my opinion. There is a manageable level of traffic as it is. Splitting things up wouldn't gain much and would make a lot of work for the moderators. If people want to put up links to their stuff in their threads then all the better.

How about stickying a thread called "Get to know your neighbours/regulars" or something along those lines.

That sounds like a good idea.
