I hope Mr Skeff doesn't mind me quoting him:

"there is a really nice climb right from the start, then a descent down to a main road, main road is exposed and you then take a left turn off this main road and it gets hilly again, then its a bit rolly until it gets into Dunlavin again and there is a climb up to the start finish line."

@Diarmuid. I don't race and don't know the circuit. However I have done a fair bit if cycling out by Dunlavin.
Lots of lumps and hills. All short but some reasonably steep. Hope that helps.

Steep section is in the town but wit the large bunch you should be able to hang in there, tough course but usually a good turn out so u can sit in if u wish....

Yes its all up and down, the main road section can be hard esp if head\cross wind so theres no really section where u can take a breather (or two) as once u turn of the main road (aka left turn at garage) its back to up and down gradient

Anyone have a mapmyride or similar for this?
What kind of numbers would be in the A4 group? Quite tempted to go along to this.

Thanks. Looks like it would have suited me but due to my shifter problems I'll be missing it :(

Leave it in the 12 and just use the front derailleur. ;)

Well done Diarmuid on 4th in the A4!

Top three places were Wexford Wheelers, well done lads.

That was tough, I think the longest A4 race of the year at almost 72km with a couple of bumps to make things interesting.

I had no expectations, treating it as training after a painful ride yesterday. I got into one break, killing myself to bridge across on the hill out of Dunlavin on the final lap, finally running out of steam at 66.6km, dropping out the back of the lead bunch and finishing on my own.

Maybe I should bring some sort of food or energy drink for these longer races.

    Nice to meet Spyderski! (sp?)

    Stats until I got dropped: 1:49, 36.5kph, 161bpm, 200W, 228W normalised.

Rode a4 race today and as a very non climber thought it was fairly tough ,found myself hanging on the back on the hills as usual . Well done to Diarmuid who did a lot of work chasing the break and still got up in the finish and unlucky to the lakeside wheelers rider who was away for 50km only to be caught with 300-400 mtrs to the finish. Happy with the race i got 6th and my team mates got 1st,2nd,3rd .

Good race. Ride of the day went to the Lakeside Wheeler guy who was out on his own for 50k only to be caught with 400m to go! Lumen, myself and a few others did our best to catch him. With 12k to go I was sure he was away but then we caught sight of him in the distance which energised the chase.

The climb out of the town was tough, I pushed it as hard as I could there. Wexford lads did well, they have lots of very strong riders and I was happy to get 4th. It was a close sprint for 3/4/5. 1st and 2nd had about a bike length on us.

My only regret was forgetting to wear my black alternate Orwell jersey. </mememememe>

7th for me the hills were a killer esp the one going back into Dunlavin the surface really took it out of me. Felt really sorry for the Mullingar guy esp as his team mate did a lot of chasing down. Strange thought that was just a Swords thing. :p

Not feeling great going into this and spotted the Wexfoird lads looking a bit too organised for A4 at the start. Hills murdered me really need to lose some weight. Pace fine otherwise but having gone into the red/reserves on 5 occasions for the 5 climbs I just didn't have a kick on the uphill finish. I went arounf thr last corner in 7th and had nothing left even though I really prefer a slight uphill finish as I can finish stronger. The longer distance defintitely made a difference and probably 20 km more than I'm used too at that pace. The last hill after the main road on the last lap I was barely hanging on and 3 times thought I wasn't going to keep up so am glad I toughed it out.

Tried not to chase too hard and be sensible but obviously not enough as only 1 Wexford guy did a tap but they placed 4 of 6 so good racing for them. Risky though as the breakaway was v close to getting away.

Diarmuid good work you chased a lot and had plently left for the finish. As we went off the main road I shouted at you not to kill yourself as there would be attacks soon, not sure if you heard me but you went around the corner and the seemed to hammer the pace yourself! Lumen you looked strong on the hills and were well able to jump on the big hill. I need 2 points to be upgraded but I kind of knew today wasn't going to be the day after the weekend I've had and the hilly course. Another race a few more things learnt. In a world of hurt/tiredness tonight.

Damien was gutted only to be caught in the closing 400metres!!!! What a rider

Sounds like a great race. Well done to all.

Great race and nice to have the extra distance & few hills.

Hard luck to Lakeside rider. Great effort and I'm sure he'll pull one off soon.

Diarmuid, well done on 4th even after doing major work throughout the race & keeping things animated.

Hats off to your team mate for pulling everything back for the sprint.

Definitely more than 1 Wex rider doing the work. Just at different times. Not exactly going to team TT on the front.

shaungil, weren't you the guy (Swords??) sitting in and shouting at everyone to "keep it going lads" ? ;):D

Ouch harsh:cool:. Good racing by Wexford, hats off. On three occasions I asked Wexford lads to do something and was ignored or told sure he's gone no point in chasing. Last main road stint one Wex guy worked. There's nothing wrong with this you got 123 so fair play.

However I know you are not being serious saying I sat on so will forgive this scurrilous rumour. Some lads working hard were big Tiernans guy another lad in light blue gear as well as Diarmuid and Lumen from what I saw. I was dying after those hills but thought I did a decent stint.

But you are right I should have copied other lads and sat on till the sprint!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭fondriest

@Shaungil , agree with you about the big guy from st. tiernans and the other lad but both of them died on the last hill and i knew if i had pulled on the last lap i for one would not have gotten over the last hill. just have to ride smart. so i stuck to your back wheel and hoped you would'nt get dropped. THANKS.:o

I'm not slagging off anyone who from my perspective didn't do any work and I hope it's not construed as this.

To be fair I sat on on the first lap and only did anything when I was recovered from hill and we needed to chase so couldn't even see if lads were working.

My reason for cycling is fitness and love murdering myself. Winning or placing races is not my main aim for doing this malarkey. Straight after the race two guys asked me who won and when I told them the results they expleted and complained about them not working. My immediate reaction was fair play to the guys that won it no one is obliged to work and they raced smart.

Many of my team mates and friends do the same and I don't cast judgement. I'm just not into it myself even though my sprint isn't that bad. We're racing not having a competition to see who can do the most work.

I agree completely. If you don't want to drag the bunch along, don't drag the bunch along. Sit in or go off on a break. If everyone sat up, the pace would slow enough to make more breaks possible. Ideally you want attacks going on throughout the race to shell off the weaker people (like me, in that race).

IMO there are too many people treating A4 races like handicapped club league races. I'm not having a go, and perfectly happy with the status quo - when I have the legs I'll go.

As you say, it's a race and races have tactics. One has to weigh up whether to work if others are supposedly not working or sit up and let the race "die".

On the point of Wex not working, we had 2 lads working either to help bring back the Lakeside rider (Fondriest & Simonski) or up the hills or in the breaks (myself, Simonski & Dave).

We worked but didn't over-work, if that makes any sense.

In the end we try and ride as a team and do our best to get a result for at least one of our riders.

In this race we were lucky enough to get a very good result but in previous races we worked & chased and attacked and nothing came off.

That's racing. Next time it might be your team getting 1,2,3.

No complaints from me. I felt strong so I worked hard. If I'd saved myself, I doubt I'd have done any better in the sprint. Of course, that didn't stop me "encouraging" as many others as possible to work to catch the breakaway ;)

It definitely helped to bring everything together.

    Great fun :-)

Lads just to say i've done that race several times over the last 15 years and have to say that was one of the hardest. I can honestly say that anyone who finished with the winners could easily be competitive in the A3 bunch. I was the guy in red who sat on and couldn't believe that there weren't more guys attacking rather than chasing horses for courses I suppose, I can honestly say I was waiting for the bunch sprint and couldnt care less if it was for second place in the end my old legs blew at the library ah well it was only my second race since drogheda. All the same lads you should be thinking higher and better cause your certainly well capable.

I'd have loved to attack but where? I was too busy chewing the handlebars on the hills, chasing down the hills and then trying to recover on the main road.

Possibly would have been worth someone taking a fler just before the village but someone (Diarmuid) was keeping the pace fairly high on the donwhill into the village. I thought there'd be more attacking too

    normalised.

Lumen Lumen Lumen: the transition from training to racing requires nutrition for the intense effort versus relative non effort in touring and base training.

proper nutrition regime pre race and during the race will easily see you over 66km with lots of energy.

try it out on ur long distance training, know where u typically run out of energy and treat it with a pre race and duyring race nutrition regime.

I know from years of (non competitive) cycling that zero energy supplement spins , in base training , and I will run out of energy at exactly 25 miles. this figure has not budged in years.

make that intense miles and the 25mile 'barrier' will drop. so pre nutrition urself and during the race provide nutrition to urself. You should easily survive 80 miles on nutrition.
