    Hi all,

I am thinking about picking up an 8GB 3G

is it still worth it with the 3Gs and the 4 now available?

is there much that the others can do that the 3G cant?

    cheers

the 3g is very slow, the keyboard stalls all the time and it doesnt get on too well with 4.0. get a 3gs if you want to save money

A 3G will still work fine, but give it another 6-12 months and you'll find it unusable for most apps except the core ones.

Any future major OS updates (iOS 5 probably released in June 2011) are likely to be out of the reach of 3G owners.

The 3G has been in production now since mid-2008 and the battery type has a typical life of 2 -3 years, so unless you get one that rolled off the production line this year, most second hand 3G's are going to start developing battery problems (i.e. crap battery life) over the next 12-18 months.

I still have mine and rather than upgrading I switched networks and sold the new handset so I'm basically stuck with it now. But I don't mind. It can't do the multitasking on OS4 and it can get quite slow. I was happier with OS3.1 so I'm going to downgrade and stick with it.

My battery is still good, then again anything is better than the battery when it was jailbroken. I use it 99% for facebook, word warp and Air mouse. Everything else is rarely used and it's fine for these apps. If you want to play the higher graphic games or have more than maybe 2 web pages open then I'd defo go with the 3Gs as the 3G is a lot slower.

Still, I love mine and I have no reason to upgrade so I'd recommend it if you got it for the right price.

get one, jailbreak it and work away. I'm still on 3.12 and already have apps to multi task and categories. If its your first iphone you wouldn't notice the speed.

Meh. For the money you're spending you'd want something more future-proof. You can get the new 8gb 3GS for quite cheap now. Recommended.

if your looking at say a iPhone 3G versus a Samsung Tocco or the like, you'd have to go with the iPhone. If you keep with the basic apps like mail, facebook, texting, youtube etc etc you won't really notice a huge slowdown. But I reckon new apps released (with iOS4 particularly and the 600Mhz 3Gs and 800-1000Mhz iPhone 4) in mind will be basically unusable on the 3G which only runs on 400Mhz.

Reckon a good condition 8gb 3G model would cost you about 150-200euro unlocked.

I'll be selling one in a few weeks! haha

I picked up a 16GB 3G about a month ago and I have to say I'm happy with it. Paid €260 for it, unlocked by O2 and it's in great condition.

It can be a bit slow, most noticeably with Navigon SatNav but honestly, in general it's fine. As someone said, if it's your first iPhone, you'll be too busy enjoying it to mind about the speed :)
