Payzone rip-off?

I had to pay for a couple of M50 tolls yesterday, and went to one of the shops listed on payzone (J&M Bracken and Daughters on the Wexford road in Arklow) to pay.
I was charged €6.30, even though the toll charge is only €3 each way.
When I asked why it was €6.30 and not €6, I was told that there is a 30 cent charge.:confused::eek:

The last time I had to pay for a toll I used Barndarrig Service Station on the N11, and I don't recall them asking for an extra 30 cent. I only paid in Arklow yesterday as Barndarrig stopped doing the tolls over a month ago

Not having my glasses with me, I could not check my receipt. When I did manage to check it, the receipt only shows the €6 toll charge but not the 30 cent charge.

    I know it's only 30 cent, but 30 cent is 30 cent!!!

It's the damn principle of it all!! :(:(

Do we now have to pay for the priveledge of paying?:mad::mad:

WOW! A result of sorts, and within a working day as well!

Just before I posted on here about the Payzone rip-off, I had actually e-mailed Payzone with regards to this 30 cent charge.

I've just recieved a phone call from Payzone stating that surcharging by the pay outlets is definately a no-no.

So, if you're using a Payzone outlet and they try to charge you for the priveledge - first off refuse to pay the illegal surcharge, and secondly get on to Payzone and let them know, 'cos don't know unless they're told.

selling ciggies to kids is illegal a retailer adding a surcharge isn't !!!! .

There is obviously an agreeement from Payzone and the outlets that a surcharge isn't levied and obviously some outlets feel that it isn't worth the hassle with out one.

report them to payzone alright .. but it aint illegal !!!!

With respect this is just lip service your getting from payzone

Payzone would not have the balls to ring a store and warn them about charging extra, firstly its completely illegal for them to dictate what to charge for a product, they can only SUGGEST a RRP. If I want to sell it for 10 euro I can.

Also the store would just tell them where to go and to stick their business and take all their equipment out of the store. Payzone beg and bribe to get into stores, they have zero influence on us.

finally the reason for the surcharge is simply because the stores get basically nothing from 'providing the service', everything has to pay its way, and a commission of 6 cent on a 6 euro transaction when you have to pay for the phone lines etc etc isn't on.

I personally don't, and wouldn't charge any extra but I fully understand the reasons for people who do.

Payzone are full of sh*t. They have no say on the surcharge and cannot dictate the price charged. They gave you lip service - nothing more - nothing less. They are giving the shop 3 cent for the toll but then charge the shop 15 euro a month for the machine to do it. The machine does do other functions, yes, but shops are not charities. If you dont want To pay it, decline and do it elsewhere. Payzone know all about it but wont tell you so.

If they deny this, then I call them a liar. (I have been down this road and they backed down.) AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME !

Sorry to correct you there, but they do/did have the balls to ring the store. They rang me. I made a compaint to the competition authority about price fixing and the pressure they were attempting to apply to me.

I stopped taking their calls and insisted on correspondence being in writing so they could be CC'd to the competition authority and suddenly the problem went away.......

Oh and by the way, I agree with EVERYTHING else Hammertime says, its spot on.

bloody hell, the neck of them

I would go absolutely radio rental if they had the stupidity to attempt to ring me and tell me what to charge for anything in MY store.

I presume you lost the plot with them?

    Lose the plot? Nooooo.

Boxed clever I did. The rep rang me about how the customer complained to the NRA blah blah blah, they werent happy blah, blah blah, its in the contract they can pull the service for any reason (copy in the post highlighted in pink), blah blah.

I complained to the competition authority that I was being pressurised by payzone into illegal price fixing and I was law abiding blah blah.

Then when I stopped taking calls and insisted on emails and letters (so I could keep records) it stopped.....

    Is it?, dam, I didn't know that.

Well, there goes my latest sideline:(

How about fireworks, are they OK?

BTW, if like me you only use the M50 very infrequently, you could setup a video account. It's very handy and a bit cheaper too!

Have to agree with the lads there re payzone they are absolute ****tards to deal with from a retail perspective.

We have pulled all our payzone services and now only use them for credit/laser card processing and only then because we can't get a machine from anywhere else. For 3V top ups for instance out of the €5 you pay the retailer gets 50c which in a lot of cases is useless due to the cost of lodging the notes

Come october, I will have to pay for my lodgements. At the moment, I have free banking as a new startup.

I will have to look carefully at this. If something costs more than its worth, it may have to go, either that or a handling fee for doing it.

I hope the ripoff thread has loads of space for me....:D:D:D

Oh dear, have I opened a can of worms here?

Hammertime - it might have been lip service, but they never charged me for it.

    The Real B-Man - I use the M50 maybe once or twice a year. I won't be paying for a tag I don't use.

superscouse - if they're giving you 3c per transaction, but charging you €15 a month for the equipment then it ain't working. Is it?

Perhaps if these questionable charges were displayed prominantly the customer can then make up thier own mind whether to use that particular establishments facilities before they get ripped off some more?
