What's a dental 'dressing'?

I visited the dentist on Monday knowing I needed some fillings. One tooth was drilled and a dressing placed in. I was asked to come back next monday to finish the filling. Can anybody elaborate on what this dressing is, and why it's required? Or, why would a filling be performed in two stages?

I think the dressing is just to try to settle the tooth, and if this works when you go back to your Dentist next week, he will check the tooth again and if it has settled and you have no problems with the nerve in your tooth, then he will go ahead and fill it with the permanent filling. I could be wrong, but I think thats what it is.;) Sorry if I'm wrong.

that sounds reasonable. is it correct of me to presume that the cost of the filling, €130 in my case, includes this dressing or should I expect to pay more money to finish off the job? there's no answer at the practice at the moment so can't get an answer from them right now.

The last time I got a dressing it was all included in the price. €130.00 sounds about right, must be a back tooth! I hope it settles for you. Best of luck - let me know how you get on :D
