My recent favourite has to be Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey) and Dr John Watson (Jude Law).. I normally wouldn't be a huge Jude Law fan but I thought the onscreen banter between these two was brilliant.. they worked really well together..

My oldie would be Laurel and Hardy.. pure comic genius...

Out of that list? Christopher Nolan's Batman and Gordon. Both characterisations and character interactions are such a step up from what Burton and Schumacher made of both characters, especially Gordon.

In the comics there is a great friendship between the two, where one man has brought the other back from the brink and vice versa. In Nolan's films there is definitely a firm friendship established by the end of TDK. This is made evident by Batman saving Jim's son and the final interaction between the two.

I can't wait to see where B3 brings their friendship. :)

I voted Batman and Gordon but I think Capt. Jack Aubrey(Russel Crowe) and Dr Stephen Maturin(Paul Bettany) from Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Ithink their on-screen friendship elevated the movie from decent to classic.

Absolutely. I especially appreciated particular moments, some original, some taken from comics:

    • Gordon comforting young Bruce after his parents' murder, wrapping the blanket round him like a father would do.
    • Never having to say thank-you---brilliant. Batman and Gordon become equals, and brothers in arms.
    • The interrogation of Joker: Gordon trusting Batman alone in there---and panicking when he sees Joker provoking the Bat into violence.
    • Batman on the run---Gordon is very clearly heartbroken, both by the tragic end of Dent, and by Batman's heroic self-exile.
I'm not sure if it was ever implied, or hinted-at, but Gordon is, at least in Nolan's films, pretty much working-class. I don't like classing people but what I mean is that he is very obviously living in a rough part of Gotham, possibly near the Narrows---and has cut his teeth pushing through the crud to get to Commissioner.

Batman is upper-crust, spoon-fed and while cursed with bearing witness to his parents' murder, is blessed with billions of dollars to make his dreams---and criminals' nightmares---a reality.

So their friendship and teamwork comes from meeting somewhere in the middle. Does this make any sense to anyone reading this? :D

Certainly would have voted for them.

    Comedy gold.

Edit: Any chance a mod could alter the poll to add in more options?

    Please. :D

Since some people seem interested in discussing this, I'll leave it open for the time being. If it just descends into a list thread, it will have to be closed.

Plenty of good dynamic duos out there. A favourite of mine would be The Dude and Walter in the Big Lebowski. Such an inspired contrast of characters: The Dude perhaps the most passive, carefree individual you'll ever meet, and Walter a grizzled, angry Vietnam vet willing to pull a pistol at the merest suggestion of a foul ball. Never more obvious than the inspired take on the good cop bad cop routine as they try to recover the Dude's stolen car. A farcical interview of a high school kid concludes with Walter repeatedly yelling "This is what happens when you **** a stranger in the ass!" as he beats a car with a golf club, while the Dude awkwardly watches on and unsuccessfully tries to calm his bitter friend down.

It's just how silly the two as a pair are that make them work as a comic duo. Their plans rarely, if ever, come together, and ultimately their big, misguided dreams just conclude with a game of bowling. Then there's Donnie, the faithful third member of the team, who can't get a word in edgeways due to Walter's aggressive dismissal of pretty much everything he says. Two ludicrous, absurd parodies of two very different types of people, but the dynamic nature of the world's laziest man and the angriest one makes for some fine comedy.

The interaction between Andy DuFresne and Red is one of mutual respect and even a Father/Son relationship

The man with no name and Tuco : even though we have these two characters who work with each other only for their mutual benefit, they both earn each others grudging respect and come to the aid of each other

Just to prevent the dreaded descent into list-dom, I'll explain my choice of Kirk and Spock:

They complement each other perfectly: Kirk the instinctive and charismatic leader, Spock the deep thinker, cool calculator, and 100% reliable comrade.

Their best moments together were in Star Treks II and VI. In II, Spock is both logical and warm, when he offers Kirk full command of the Enterprise. He is unabashedly honest with his close friend, and even tells his best friend "Don't grieve", whilst dying to save the ship. In VI, they quietly succumb to the onslaught of age together, but with a twinkle in their eye, and still meet Chang head-on.

Even their strange cross-timeline meeting in Star Trek XI had a nice feel to it; despite their changed histories, and huge age-gap, the old friendship is there. And of course, Spock 2.0 is a psycho a$$hole to Kirk at the start, but by the end they're trusting and chummy...

Truly, one of the first and finest bromances of our modern age:)
