    Hi folks,
Just dloaded Avast 5.0 this morning at home (had an out-of-date McAfee on the PC already) & now I can't browse the internet ("Page not found"). What am I not doing right?
    • Internet was working on loadsa different pages just beforehand
    • download was from Avast website so seemed on the up & up
    • re-started PC but no joy
    • Windows tells me I'm already connected to the internet when I troubleshoot
The PC has Windows Vista, ISP is eircom & browser is IE (6 or 7 not sure),

    Thanks for any help

Do you have a connection to the router/modem ?

    Try to ping it.

    Press Windows+R
    type cmd, press ENTER
type ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (XXX being your router/modem IP-Address),Press ENTER
it should show a few lines and then the report with sent and loss of packets

    alternatively you can
type ping www.eircom.net for example and see if it finds the server

if thats alright your browser has a prob. try to reset IE to its original settings. Its in the internet options.

    Check avast firewall settings

    Thanks folks.
I was surfing around at work on the avast forum & it seems this problem is not uncommon with avast, esp where there was a previous AV installed.

Took the lazy option, uninstalled & we are back in business...

Might give AVG a try now instead.

Try Avira, it is not as heavy and seems better.

Have you made sure McAfee is completely uninstalled ? Check their website for a removal tool first. I might be stating the obvious, but some of the bulkier AV's leave a mess behind if you just use the add/remove programs feature.

I would stay away from stuff like McAfee and Norton. It's better to use a few different programs. Those so called suites are easy too easy to disable.

Use a combination of Avira AV,Threatfire and MBAM/Spybot instead.

Sound, will do. I knew about Norton being difficult to remove completely, should've known McAfee wouldn't be much different.

Will try the ones listed above - thanks for the suggestions.
