Assault - Report to Gardai or not

I have a housemate of mine who is not Irish that was attacked on Saturday night in Dublin.

I only found out about it today when he had to come home early with a headache.

Basically 2 lads approached him looking for a cigarette at around 2.30am Saturday night but all he had was rolling tobacco so he said he would roll them one if they wanted. As he was doing this one of them suddenly started to punch and kick him and when he put his hands to his head to shield himself, the other guy joined in making 2:1.

When he told me this today I said he should report it to the gardai. He said it wasn't worth his while and it would do no use.

I said that if it has meant that you have been suffering with pain for 3 days and had to come home early for work that it is pretty serious.

What do you think? Should he report it, or is it not worth the effort?

TBH **** all use reporting it now.

HOWEVER, no matter how much he resists, get him to a Dr. first thing in the morning to make sure he's ok. Headaches 3 days after an assault like that is not a good sign..Could have suffered a more serious head injury than he thinks!

He seems to be on a downward spiral.

Maybe you could kick the crap out of him and steal his wallet.

The guards will do nothing, but reporting it will add to the statistics for 2010 enabling us to start threads b1tching and moaning about safety in this country in 2011.

Tell him to report it, there could be a chance the attackers are known to the Gardai and they might have caught it on camera.

People saying don't report are the exact same people who whine and moan the gardai not doing anything about these types of things, which is either ironic or a paradox, either way it's thick.

I got kicked in the head a few times outside a nightclub in cork, totally unprovoked, really battered up like.

Woke up to 2 cops standing over me

"are sure your alright lad, off home with yourself"

Didnt even help me to my feet.

This type of **** happens around the country outside every nightclub each weekend, he should report it but i doubt anything will ever happen

Get that lad to a doctor in the morning.
You don't know what kind of internal injuries exist. A headache is serious, the lad may have to do an MRI scan

Anyway OP, that attack happened on Saturday and this lad might only report it today, Wednesday? Bit late now.
Report it anyway, get it logged as a statistic but the gardai won't don't anything here.

i cant imaginge it will make a whole lot of difference but i'd still report it, and make a deal out of it, otherwise nothing will ever come of it

    I'm not sure that's fair.

The chances of something being done about it are practically zero unless the OPs mate dies or something.

I hate stories like that though.

Stopping for 2 blokes at 2:30 in Dublin seems a bit naive. I know it shouldn't happen, but by walking alone, you become a magnet for many kinds of undesirables. Seems to be a fact of life nowadays...

He should report it. Maybe the 2 lads attacked somebody else that night and is in a worse condition or they were arrested for something unrelated.

OR Maybe they attacked someone else and they didn't report it either. Thats the problem when you take the attitude the gards won't do anything, nobody does anything and you are giving the gards an excuse to do nothing.

Yeh, get the guy to a doc quick. Headache after 3 days sounds dodgy

In my experience Garda haven't been the most cooperative in these situations they tend to say "we'll get back to you" and never do, so forgive my distrust in them but all things considered it's best to report it if anything they may increase watch over that area and help the next poor smo!

Where are these guys when you need them!

I'd defo report it, if there was camera's around, the attackers could be recognised, they probably are known to the gardai and if he had to come home from work because of head pains..defo bring him to the doctor...could be something more serious but hopefully he'll be ok :)

    Definitely report it.

    A. It's good for their statistics and records. These bastards might have a habit of punching up people after scabbing smokes. Next time they might get caught and then your mate can be called to nail them in his assault as well. Double charge.

    B. It might be on camera. But you better hurry up. They don't keep the tapes forever.

    C. He might get a few quid crime victims compensation.

Head injuries headaches and not gone to hospital? What is with people:confused:

    Report it,hope he is ok.

I was assaulted ocne and the guards didnt really do anything..What annoyed me the most is that they were talking to the fella two mins before it happened and there were Cameras around.

Honestly cameras dont do much..If you dont belive me check out the number of crimes solved from Cameras in London, ten check out how many cameras are in that city compared to others...as well by ratio of population.

No point in reporting it. I was assaulted a few years ago. Was standing in a local club and turned around and took a headbutt to the nose. Knocked out and missing half a tooth. The bouncers were sound, looked after me and as i was leaving they told me that i should report it to the police who were sitting in their car across the road.

I walked over, explained what had happened, that the bouncers had seen it and that the bouncers had told me there were cameras in the club and pointed out the guy who had done it. At this stage my nose was still bleeding. They told me "theres nothing we can do", and said i should go home and phone an ambulance and report it tomorrow, i asked if they were on duty, they were, so i asked why were they parked outside the club. They said "we're here in case anything happens" I said that something had happened, i was assaulted. I was then tlod that there was nothing they could do and if i didn't move away from the car i'd be arrested and if i bled on the car on the way to the station i'd be charged with defacement of garda property.

Went home and did what the told me to, next day i called the local garda station to see when they would be open and was told i couldn't report it there because it had happened in a different town. My dad drove me to the next town so i could report it. Went in, gave the details, and was treated like a criminal. "What was it over, i don't believe that it was unprovoked, you must have done something to start it". Gave him the bouncers names, told him there was cameras there, gave him the address of the guy who headbutted me. Was told we'l make enquirys and get back to you.

That was 5-6 years ago and i'm still waiting. Spoke with the bouncers, they were never called or asked to give a statement and a few years later spoke with the guy who headbutted me, he had heard nothing from the cops either. It might be wrong, it might get me into trouble someday, but from then on, i'll never deal with the police. Worse than useless.
