delaying court dates.

Hi everybody (note mods: I'm not looking for legal advice related to a specific case so don't worry) here goes...

I'm just wondering does anyone have reliable information about how many times defendants in the Irish system (assuming they have a less serious criminal charge such as public disorder, criminal damage or relatively minor assaults etc) may defer their court date in either of the various courts (district and circuit). This deferral would be due to a genuine reason such as health/hospitalisation. Also how long of a delay is likely to occur if a court appearance is missed since the court system in Ireland appears to be backlogged with many cases taking more than a year to reach trial in the first instance

I often read cases where the judgment is made within a year of the offense, and others such as an assault (not causing serious harm) I read about in a Kilmainham pub that was only settled recently in the circuit court 4 years after the event. This got me thinking about why it took so long in comparison to others? What leads to such long delays?

    Thanks
