Beggars Ltd

So, having read the thread about beggars earnings, I taught I'd start this one - it's based on a personal experience I had of two beggars arguing over this particularly lucrative spot in Dublin City.

One turns to another and says something along the lines of "this is my space today, you have it next week" and if this wasn't odd enough...the beggar takes his seat on the curb and as I'm heading back in the same direction later on, maybe two hours later, I spot him again - only this time he's handing over all his money to a guy with a red cloth bag. The guy pockets the bag and moves on. He leaves the beggar with a few coppers and the guy seems happy enough with this.

So I'm wondering, is the whole thing "unionised" in Dublin City, is their a hierarchy of begging that we don't know about....do beggars earn a percentage of the money they collect according to their spaces...and for that matter, as absurd as it sounds, who is the one keeping all the beggars in their place and assuring they each get different spots at different times...who's creating the roster?

Has anyone else had any experience of this?

Fagin is a fictional character who appears in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist, referred to in the preface of the novel as a "receiver of stolen goods", but referred to more frequently within the actual story as the "merry old gentleman"

OK, so whose the new Fagin?

Begging is an international business. Horizon or something like that reported on it a decade ago. I've seen no reason not to think that it's ongoing.

It'd be my guess that it was someone taking the bulk of his money so that he wouldn't be robbed, and so people would think he's only getting coppers and feel sorry for him. I know that beggars in Limerick hide away euro coins and that. As for the reasons I'm taking a guess.

its organised....lucrative and cut throat...most irish beggars have drug problems.

very few homeless irish people begging on the high profile streets....
too many foreigners acting in packs.

i never give money. i give my time, or failing that i buy em a sambo/burger
