just downloaded and installed ios 4.01 on top of 4.0
essentially it's the fix for how the signal is calculated and then shown.
It appears, after the install, I have sh!t reception in the house afterall!
1 bar, down from 4 pre install

Yep, my 3G signal used to be one bar downstairs and 3 up. Now it's useless. Nice one apple.

Are ye saying that it is actually making the signal worse or just showing the reading as worse

you always had bad reception its just reporting it now, it wont be any more or less likely to drop a call or loose a connection

mine was bad anyway and getting no service in the last 6 weeks, I just updated to 4.0.1 on an Iphone 3G (it was driving me nuts hangning and the like) so now the signal is going from 1 to 3 and 4 bars! it was normally stably crap now it crap, good, crap, good! I dont know what to make of it.
I am really considering downgrading anyway iOS4 is rubbish on older phones good luck with it though

yes people are finding this hard to understand.

apple's algorithm was incorrect in calculating how many bars to show for a given signal strength, remember signal is measured in db, not bars. the bars are for humans ease of readability due to signal strength using minus db figures no one likes to see minus numbers no matter what.

here's a mapping of signal strength, 4.0 at the top, 4.0.1 at the bottom, actual signal strength in the middle

Creamy you're right of course, it's just annoying that I have now one bar of 3G where I used to have 3 or 4 and it drops to GPRS a lot more. It's not a big deal as I have home wifi. I work in a building that has a vodafone mast and always gave me full bars only dropping one when I went to the basement, so I'll check again when I'm back in tomorrow.

Part of me wishes apple would keep lying about reception algorithms

I'm going to stay with the lie as long as I can. It'd drive me mad not having "the look" of a good signal even though I know I don't ;)

Well I had nothing better to do so I drove 2 miles to my nearest voda 3G mast. I must have gotten within 200 yards of it and the most my phone would show is 3 maybe 4 bars. So I wonder who'll shoulder the blame or pass the buck? Will apple say it's the network or will the networks say it's the phone? I've been relatively happy with my vodafone coverage up till now.

just fyi, if you have a jailbroken device you can get SBSettings to should you the db signal strength values.

might be useful to someone but since 4.0.1 to the best of my knowledge isn't jailbroken yet it might be useless.

Ever since I "upgraded" to os4 i no longer have 3G in my house. A mile down the road all is ok.

Same issue for me - signal appears to have gone to s&&t since the upgrade. I know it's only showing me a true reflection of how bad my signal is at home - but not good.

O2 signal at my house is crap anyways, if phone is in my pocket, guaranteed when i take it out it'll say "searching" or "No Signal". NEVER had that issue whilst with Vodafone. Here's hoping the company will switch back to VF after the year's contract with O2 finishes.
