I am buying a new set of clubs and visitied both McGuirks and American Gold.

    I am looking for a Hybrid 3& 4 and 5-PW irons.

    I'm an average Golfer.

    McGuirks pushed - Adams A7

American Gold pushed - Nichlaus MTR

They obviously have better markups on these clubs. I have looked through golf reviews etc, but it is very hard to get a good comparrison.

Anyone got any ideas where the best deals or best brands are.

Or are both these unusual or bad clubs.

    Thanks

my advice, go to kinsealy golf range, there is a mcguirks there...they have loads of demo clubs there....ask the guy there if you can take out 5 different brands of irons (all 6 or 7 irons) to hit on the range...ask him for his recommendations, tell him what standard you are....see what feels best to you...do the same with hybrids another day....hit them before you buy them, that's important...best of luck...

But back to my original post

    Adams versus Nichlaus golf clubs

or are both small niche brands that I should stay away from.

wouldn't limit it to those, what looks best in you hand, what feels the best etc etc,a lot of variables

I'm sure I'll get ate for posting this but here goes. Just MY own personal opinion mind, your milage may vary.

I would rate those brands among the third tier of golf brands if you consider the top tier as Titleist, Taylormade, Mizuno (irons) Callaway and Ping

Second tier would be the likes of Nike, Wilson, Cleveland, Mizuno (woods)etc.

Third tier you have your Rams, Nicklas, Adams and so on.

I wouldn't spend my hard earned on anything other that the first 3 brands I mentioned though I could be talked into a Callaway driver or Cleaveland wedges.

agree with you to a certain extent

but then again do you think casey, woods, Justin Leonard, Stewart Cink, Trevor Immelman, Anthony Kim Carl Pettersson etc etc would use the stuff if they thought it was substandard
    i'm not so sure
or are they using TM, titleist etc with the nike swoosh painted over?

It's well known throughout the tours that Miura makes many of the clubs that the pros use and as you say stamp it with the sponsors logo. Of course nobody is saying anything officially. Tiger had a set of Titleist stamped Miuras in 1999 before he switched to Nike. It's not beyond the realms of possibility that he uses a Nike stamped set now.

Played in Portugal last year with a guy who had a set. £10,000 for the set. ouch He let me hit them on the 18th after he had beaten me on the 17th.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

    so to summarise..

    Tier 1 = miura
Tier 2 = most other clubs
Tier 3 = ram, adams, etc

What would you say are the most important factors in Titleist, Taylormade, Callaway and Ping being played the most on tour? I'd say it's money.

In terms of quality/specification tolerances there's very little difference between a tour issue Titleist iron and a tour issue Wilson/Adams/Srixon/Cleveland iron.

All the big manufacturers use chinese foundries to manufacture their clubs. Pretty much all of the brands you named (tiers 1 to 3) would have similar tolerances on their manufacturing specs for retail clubs.

So I'd say no real difference in manufacturing quality between retail titleist irons (eg AP1's) and retail Wilson tours FG's/Pi7's or Adams idea pro irons.

The biggest difference between any of these is perceived (generally thru strong advertsing and marketing), which is then re-inforced by people wanting to believe they're playing "superior" equipment.

And can people get over the Tiger using Miura irons? They're forged by Endo in Thailand/China for Nike and then ground in Texas. This has been consistently and specifically stated by Tom Stites, the Nike club guru.

thats good information mark and puts much of the above nonsense to bed
    thanks for the clarification

I've played Nicklaus Clubs for the past ten years and have won 3 Captains prizes and many other competitions and prizes. I was made redundant which left me a little flush and so I thought I'd treat myself to a nice set of Pings which I always admired. That was two years ago and I haven't won anything with them. So I'm thinking of going back to my Nicklaus clubs.
Also in the past 5 years I've spent about 1500 euro on Ping,Cobra, Cleveland and Taylormade drivers. While I found the TM the best of these I bought a Nicklaus Airmax Driver last year as I had read good reports about it.
For me it's the Business I've been driving the ball longer and straighter than ever. 250 260 with the odd 280
The best advice I can give you is whatever clubs you decide on get properly custom fitted. It will make the biggest Difference to your game. Good luck
Let us know how you get on.

Adams make excellent gear, but are more popular in the States than Europe. I had a Nicklaus 3 wood a few years back and found it a lot better than my TM 3 wood.

thats just not true anymore. It may have been the case years ago when everyone played similar forged blades but it just isn't possible anymore as clubs look different a a slight variation in hosel length, face structure etc would be obvious from club to club. No manufacturer would allow it anymore either as they would be a laughing stock when it was found out.

Every week loads of high res photos of players bags are posted across multiple golf sites where any such activity would be really clear. In fact there is a thriving business in 'Tour' only clubs from all the major manufacturers that often come straight from the tour vans.
