Stuff in Oranmore

I'm working on a neighbourhood map of Oranmore.

    So far it's this:
    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=103787127198530927107.00048bd104d2bfd098b4e&z=14

I've used the map that was in the Advertiser a while back, and also various things that I've observed and others that I've hunted down with Google.

But there are a few bits I can't quite figure out, and wondered if anyone could help:
    • Where are the national schools hiding? I think I've spotted one (38), but am not sure that it's right even. And I saw somewhere that there are three others.
    • Where's Deerpark Industrial Estate? What's the difference between it and what the Advertiser map called Glenascaul Industrial Park - or are they the same thing?
    • What's the status of the castle? I have a feeling that I read somewhere that it's a private residence (which makes me think I'd leave it out) - but is it of public interest too?
    • Is the Ramada Hotel (26) in the right place?
    • I saw one of the Oranmore shuttle buses hanging out where the 2nd bus-stop is. But is it an official stop, or was that just one driver's whim?

And is there any thing else that you think I've missed? I'm aiming to cover places of public interest, not advertise businesses - but some businesses do get on either because they host public things (hotels) or are significant employers.

PS Yes, I know, Oranmore's in the county not the city. But it's really just a suburb of the city, and besides the smart boardsies all hang out in this forum not the county one ;) So I thought I'd take my chances.

Second one is behind the astro turf. Between it and Calasanctus (spelling is waaaay off I know)

Deerpark is just across the railway tracks. The petrol station has an access road either side of it to Deerpark.

Glenascaul is further up the road on the right hand side just befoe you come to the round about for the motorway.

Not sure. Its privately owned but I think they held an open day recently for some charity? Open to correction on this.
    • Is the Ramada Hotel (26) in the right place?

    Yes

Not 100% on this. There was a bus stop in the village back in the day but i don't knowif this is still an official one since the one across from the shopping centre appeared.

Cisco maybe? Significant employer directly in front of Caulfield Industrial (already on map) in the Oranmore Business Park which is behind the Maldron hotel.

Also The Oranmore Business Park is slightly misplaced. It is more to the left and not as far back from the Maldron. The access road is directly behind the Maldron.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_King_%28Royal_Navy_officer%29

Bill King lives there, a true living legend, along with his family. He turned 100 a few weeks ago. His daughter Leonie King (an artist) lives there too with her husband Alec Finn of De Dannan.

Deerpark is behind the old Topaz garage whatever it is called now, where Fat Tony's is.

Glenascaul Industrial Estate is a different one a few hundred yards up the road on the left with Cold Move in it.

Not to be petty but the bus stops the other side of Cloonarkin. It's not an official stop, the 'official' one is actually beside the astro turf, but due to people continuously parking where they shouldn't, more often that not the bus wasn't able to get in there - so now it simply goes from outside the deli/dry cleaners there opposite the astro turf.

The national school beside Calasanctius College and astro turf pitch is, or was, Scoil Mhuire.
The village's gaelscoil, Gaelscoil de hÍde, is down the Bog Road (R338). Looking at the satellite image of the village, it's a grey rectangle between the green area just off the Dublin Road and Lisroe.
Great work, Mary... Keep it up.

    2. Glenascaul Business Park is up on the LHS going from Oranmore towards Claregalway. It has a big Cold Storage Facility. It is also be known as Glenascaul Industrial Park and Glenascaul Technology & Manufacturing Park.
    12. Orantown Centre - not Oranmore Town Centre
    16. Oranpoint Commercial Centre - is further south
    18. Oranmore Pitch is actually Oranmore/Maree GAA Pitch (they have another out in Maree)

To the NW of your ??? is the site for the new Tesco
Weight Bridge - between Glennascaul Industrail Estate and N6 Junction on the same side of the road

Just thought I'd come back and say thanks for all the help with this - the map is now live.

I'm going to do a bit of field work in a couple of weeks and get to grips with the industrial estate layout maps - there's nothing a personal visit (on foot) to actually see what's where and what buildings make good landmarks. So these won't be up for a while.

PS any more feedback is very welcome too - I've tried to go for "enduring" places only, but some things always get missed, or change.

Google (shame on them!) have the R446 Dual Carriageway numbered as the N18 and the R446 (single carriageway section) numbered as the R338. And they think there are two different N18s. Talk about confusing things for tourists.

    Yup, am working on it.

I started a layout map of Oranmore Business Park. But then I got confused about the difference between it and Deerpark - I think that technically Omniplex/CityLimits is in the latter cos that's where the access road is, but am not sure.

Came to the conclusion that I actually need to go and wander around there with a clipboard to understand what's where.

when you are up there it doesnt seem like the cinema and city limits are actually part of the estates. But I've no idea how these things work. Good luck! Are you just doing this for fun?

    Thanks.

Originally it was just for the craic, and also to give me something real to keep my writing skills in working order (dratted recession meant that IT projects were cancelled all over town: even now there are precious few business-analyst roles around and I've been doing all sorts of temp jobs to keep the rent paid).

I don't think that GalwayTransport.info will every be commercially viable - the potential number of users just too small.

But I have a certain fondness for it because it's my first "baby" and because I've had so much positive feedback from people who've found it incredibly useful. Also it's given me lots of knowledge about how web publishing and marketing (at a certain level) works, and I've started to have some other ideas about things that might be commercial.

'Tis kinda cool to think that some good things have come out of the recession and that the time I was unemployed wasn't wasted.
