    Tri coaches to be specific

How do you gauge a good one if you are relatively inexperienced. I'm sure acreditations go a certain way as do reputations but how do you tell a good one from a poor one should you be new to the sport.

Also, how much are people willing to pay to get fitter, sharper and stronger for racing during a season?

    Thanks

    Instead of the PM reply:

When sizing up coaches what I would ask is:
    * Why do they coach?
    * What do they hope to get out of the coach-athlete relationship with you?
    * How would they describe their approach to training? As in what makes the difference in training? Whats their training philiosphy?
    * What do they offer over and above other coaches?
    * How much access do you have to them? Emails? If so how often? Phone? If so how often?
    * How often will your training plan be delivered? Weekly? Monthly? Fortnightly?
    * If a problem comes up can the programmes be revised?
    * Is there a minimum commitment?
    * How would they get you from where you are to where you want to be?
    * Are their programmes tailored to specific athletes or are they off the shelf programmes with minor tweaks?
    * Will their programmes work around your time rather than the opposite?
    * What would they see as the biggest and most common limiters to AGers on the run and on the bike?

I know quite a few coaches who you tell you to get bent when you ask them, that they don't have time, and to be honest that is very indicative of their approach to coaching.

Accrediation and qualifications in my eyes means jack. I know alot of qualified coaches that my wife would draw up better training programmes than they would.

Trust is the main thing - it takes time to get built up fully and if at the beginning you don't think you will - bail. Commit completely or not at all. There are excellent coaches out there - its just a matter of finding them.
