So any of you ever walk away from the ATM without the money after going through the whole punching your pin in/selecting amount of money/asking for a receipt rigamorole?

Can't believe someone would actually do this unless they were locked or something.

A bloke in front of me in the queue for an ATM on O'Connell St did this about a year ago. I grabbed his cash and legged it after him. He seemed to be having a bad day, a bit distracted to say the least. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often to be honest.

6 people per atm per year, it estimates. and the average amount is 93 euro. Really shows how much money people were spending in those 4 years.

I saw it happen quite recently on Henry Street in Dublin.

Myself and my friend were queuing up behind a lady at the ATM. The lady walked off without taken the €80 with her!! I guess she was distracted talking with her daughter beside her and forgot. When my friend went after her with the money, it took her a split second to realise it was her money!

No ATM would dare give me any back talk, jibber jabber or sass-mouthing like that. I gets my money every time, all the time.

Also - ATM Machine - Hah!

Never happened to me, But on two occasions it happened to the person in front of me. First time it happened It was around 200-300 euro in the money slot, lucky I saw who the person was and I ran after her giving her the money. All was good.

The second time it happened I walked up to the ATM machine and there was around 100-150 euro in th money slot I knew there was a man at it before I walked up, but there was no que since he left before I arrived. I didn't see weer he went of to. I wanted to take money out so I took the money and then put in my card(you cant put in the card if the money was still there) started to put in the pin when the guy came back, He looked at me and shouted at me to return his money. Started aquising me of theft and everything. I gladly handed back his money and told him politely I was gonna go into the bank and tell the worker in there what happened, but wanted to take money out first. While all this was happening my money came out of the ATM. He looked at it and realised I was telling the truth and he said sorry and kinda ran off.

Never knew that if cash/card that was left there would be taken back in. Future knowledge I guess

If the money isn't taken its sucked back into the machine. Happened to me a few weeks ago when I was going on 2 hours sleep. Took the card and left without my €70. Bank ended up giving it back to me in the end though.

    Why are they being refunded?

They didn't take the cash from the machine, so, what happened to it?

If the machine sucks it up surely their account isn't debited?

It recorded that account to be debited when the money was sucked back up. Some error of sorts. Its all in the article! You should read it

Someone forgot to take their €200 out of an ATM in Dundrum one day.... I gave it in to customer services thinking i'd never hear any more of it! Later that day a woman came into my shop with a box o chocs and €20 just to say thanks after she had gotten her money back!!

Couldn't imagine forgetting to take my money out tbh!!

only a few weeks back, I was using the ATm and got a txt message, so as soon as I got my card out, i turned away to read my TXT but after a few seconds it clicked I had forgot the cash, lucky I managed to turn around and still get my money.

It can easily enough happen I guess.

Yeah I was queuing at an ATM on O'Connell St about a year ago, this scumbag young wan in a tracksuit behind me said give us your money or i'll stab ye in the pancreas, then I heard her friend shout out 'Did ye get his bleedin monay Jaxxy?', I gave her my money and ran but she legged it after me and beat the life out of me with a pair of doc marten boots she found at the side of the road. I had such a bad day.

Guy in front of me walked off without taking his E200....I didn´t cop on for about a half minute when the machine kept telling me to take my money before I even put the card in. Looked down and there was the money...had no idea what the guy looked so kind of half heartedly ran down the street looking for someone who looked like they just lost 200 quid...al I knew was that he was a man. Waited at the machine for an hour and a half to see if he´d return. He didn´t. Took 100 Euro and gave the other 100 to a guy cleaning the streets because I felt so guilty. Really needed the money at the time, so I was delighted.

you should of returned it to the bank, gave the time and date the money was taken out of the ATM, the amount of money and they would of been able to identify the owner of the money and get in contact with him, you had a choice there.

43,000 bank customers are being refunded after not taking cash from Bank of Ireland ATMs.

€1.3m will be refunded to 14,000 Bank of Ireland customers, while a total of €1.7m will be returned to 29,000 customers of other banks who used the Bank of Ireland ATMs.

    The average refund is €93.

    (€1.3m + €1.7m) / 43000 = €69.77?

I've done it in London Paddington Railway station

The ATM was saying it wasn't paying/wrong card, and after two attempts I took my card and walked off..for some unknown reason I looked back and suddenly there's the money appearing below..

Of course the nice gentlemen and women in the queue would've done the honourable thing in any case... :)

I did it in a London tube station. There are elevators which take you down to the trains- the doors were closing, so I grabbed my card and ran without thinking. Some dickhole must have walked away with my money because I never got it back.

I once saw an older man do this in front of me in the queue for an ATM once. It was a quiet Thursday and he just left the money with the siren actually beeping really loudly.

I'll be completely honest, I was tempted to take it and pocket it, because I remember quite clearly I had just a 10 Euro note to my name that week and I was expected to go for a night out to see a mate's band perform.

Anyway, I took the money and gave it back to him - he didn't even thank me properly, not that that was the point, but he took off with such speed I had to go after him and get his attention so it took me a while. He was also quite deaf. I don't know how much we were dealing with but I did see two 50 Euro notes at the top of a considerably heavy pile...it wouldn't have been right to take that.

Fast forward two years, me and a friend are standing at the ATM, same situation happens....20 Euro note left in the machine....my mate grabs it and pockets it. The woman comes back and asks either of us if the machine spit out 20 Euro, thinking she's short, and my mate says no. When she left I asked him for the money and went and gave it to her. Her response was actually to accuse us both of theft, and she claimed it was lucky there wasn't a Garda around to report us. My mate wasn't pleased.

Weird this thread coming up now cuz this happened to be bout a week ago in Malahide.

Standing at the ATM and an elderly lady was at the machine presing buttons like nobodys business and then straight into the bank looking really annoyed. I walked up to the machine and it was beeping loudly. Looked down, lo and behold there is €100!! I dont know if she didnt know where the money came out or what the story was but I went into the bank and asked her was she trying to withdraw cash. She said yes, €100 but the machine wasnt working! I handed her the money and she just got flustered said a quick thanks and left the bank.

Id say it happens more often than youd think, especially while drunk / distracted etc.

Can you still do this ...

    Withdraw say 300 euro.
Take the first 5 fifty euros off.
Waiting for the machine to take the money back in.
    Pocket 250 euro.

Is that what you would´ve done? This didn´t happen in Ireland and it happened late at night.....massive queue of people withdrawing money...there´s no way they could´ve identified the guy with the very approximate time of withdrawal. What else would they have to go on and do you think they´d be have been bothered to find him?? 200 quid in the pocket of the bank teller, that´s what would have happened, particularly if it wasn´t his bank. I waited for an hour and a half and conferred by phone with friends and family and people standing on the street to see what I should do. Everyone told me to take it. Not many people would have done that, at least the people I spoke to AND I gave half away. I think I did more than what more than most people would´ve done and believe me, I felt guilty for at least a week after.
