    Nice idea:)
I dunno if renting out a room is your best idea for starting off but that depends on what you plan to do?

I like the idea as well.

I'm a bit west of you in America, so I can't offer any recommendations on places in Naas to host a LUG. Here in northern Kansas (North Central Kansas Linux Users Group) we meet in two places, both of them public spaces (attached to libraries) that are free to non-profit community groups. If there's something along those lines in Naas (or somewhere close along the N/M7 corridor) I'd suggest looking there prior to paying to reserve space in a community centre. Heck, you could organize something at a halfway point such as Kildare town to attract people along the whole M7 corridor from Naas to Portlaoise.

If you do get something going do let me know. I may be around Naas next February and would like to drop by a meeting or two.

I think Maynooth is a great meeting place;)That maybe a biased opinion.

    My advice is -
1st thing to do is set up a mailing list.
2nd thing is organise a trip to the pub...it promotes discussion!!!

I don't always check this thread but if you decide on anything pm me and I will bring it to the attention of ILUG members (www.linux.ie) there are a few around the Kildare area.

A LUG is for anyone! You should feel free to show up.

Ah well, that would explain why there was no-one there when I arrived (late naturally, since midday is far too early for me on a Saturday. It was after 12.30 by the time I got to Barker & Jones, and wandered around the upstairs Costa failing to spot any likely candidates. I won't be able to make it next week, as I will be in Donegal for the next two weekends, but I'd hope to show up at some point.

Can I suggest you bring along a stuffed penguin toy to the next meeting, so people showing up for the first time know where the crowd is.

    Best of luck.

Have you thought of setting up a blog (or a site on some sort of CMS), Twitter account, IRC Channel and/or a mailing list and perhaps getting links posted to them on linux.ie? Those seem to be the standard communication outlets for a LUG.

EDIT: Heh, my bad; got too little sleep last night to remember the Google group and blog plans. So I'll pare my recommendations down to a Twitter account and IRC channel.

I don't know how to set an IRC channel, but think a twitter account is a good idea.So I just set one up http://twitter.com/kildarelug. and a blog on wordpress.
kildarelug.wordpress.com.( it is temp home till we set our own server)

Setting up an IRC channel isn't difficult at all. Just head over to an IRC network (most LUGs use irc.freenode.net) using either your favourite IRC client or a network's web client (Freenode uses http://webchat.freenode.net/) and simply do a "/join #channelname" to form and join the channel. Most networks also offer channel services that prevent channel takeovers. You may look into what's required to enable services on the channel (I'm only familiar with Freenode's ChanServ).

I'll set up, a IRC channel tomorrow , I tried tonight when when i went to register the room I think I did something wrong . Never really used iRC much , so I got to wait for my nick to expire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 760 ✭✭✭mach1982

our IRC channel up #kildarelug on freenode

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭rfrederick

    Already on the channel.
Note that I do lurk a lot on IRC, but I do glance at my channels a number of times a day and try to engage as much as I'm able to.

I'm going to be around Kildare in February (heading to Tedfest out in Inis Mór). Thoughts on a possible get-together then?

Just on this topic, like others I don't have time to meet up in the city during the week or weekend or Naas for that matter. I'm just curious would anyone be interested in meeting up in Maynooth once a month to talk Linux + open source?? the glenroyal offers free wifi in the bar + coffee etc.

I'd be up for it when I'm in the neighborhood early next year.
