    Okay this is complicated
I am trying to hook up a G4 ibook running tiger to a new Windows 7 desktop.
I can connect from the PC to the ibook and access all the users files that I want. Unfortunately, I cannot access external devices. I have a firewire harddisk and a usb one I want to access from the PC. How to I share external devices. Possibly, it can be done from the desktop via alias but I can't get Windows to understand them.

Also, I cannot access the PC from the mac. An alias appears for the computer but it is shaded out and I get an error message when I try to open it. Perhaps I just need to know the proper workgorup name but I cannot find how to do it in 7

Oh yeah, I am connecting via ethernet and would like to be able to get the laptop online through the PC.

Trying it adding the external drive to your shared folders in System Prefs > Sharing > File Sharing.

Make sure SMB is turned on as well. It's under "options" in the same place as the above.

    I don't see it.
My Sharing doesn't have those options that I can see.
Under System Prefs > Sharing > Services windows sharing and personal sharing are on but i don't see any 'options' or way of adding files to the share.

Sorry, I forgot you were on Tiger. My memory of 10.4's preferences are hazy. I'll have a look at my iBook later, but I think you might need to use something like SharePoints to share your external hd.

Yeah, there's no option to add shared folders in Tiger. That was only added in Leopard. Try downloading SharePoints:

    Hallelujah!!!
the files are sharing at Windows can read both of them (despite the file system differences.

Any ideas on why I cannot connect the other way round? I can't access the PC from the MAC.
Ultimaltely I want to use it as a proxy to get the ibook online as there is a crap wireless router in the house and the airport is out of reach.

To share an external drive in Tiger with Windows clients just enable Windows File Sharing in "System Preferences > Sharing" . Click "Accounts. . " to the right and enable your account with the tick box and any other accounts you wish to allow use SMB sharing..

Select the Drives icon on the Finder Desktop (single click) and hit Apple+i.
In the Ownership & Permissions section near the bottom select your account as the owner and give read/write access to anyone you wish to see your files. Click the lock to save these settings.

On the Windows machine (Windows XP) you will need to connect to the Mac with the same user credentials as you use on the Mac (Username/password) then simply map the drive telling the panel to connect using these details in future.

You can also join the Windows Workgroup by going to /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access. Unlock the panel and select (tick) SMB/CIFS and click configure underneath. Provide the Workgroup name and the IP of a WINS server if you know it - not essential though.

Hope this helps. This has been working for me without any third party software installed.

Thanks a million. I already tried the sharepoint and that did the job perfectly.
I did what you said in Directory access and got rid of a dodgy IP address.
I am Windows 7 buy the system tab still showed the Workgroup name. I logged in with my Windows credentials and everythin connects perfectly.
    Thanks everyone
