i get mine in the local coop in birr, cost for a 15 ft galvanised with no mesh was 145. a bit expensice for what it is i think. ive tried around a few other places and there was a small difference, o more than 15 euro either way.

Another thing to consider, you need to compare like with like.

All depends on the strength of the gate:
    light(field gate)
    medium or
    heavy duty

I used heavy duty gates successfully with posts and threaded hangers in '06 for cattle handling facility in the yard. Passed for grant no bother

Agree. You could buy a light gate off the back of a Hiace for €100 and it will rust to nothing in 10 years or a heavy duty gate for €150 that will last a lifetime.

Agree, we bought from the back of a Hiace years ago, all fell apart and rusted, even when painted.
Get them at your local COOP, at least they will be right!

Indeed. We bought heavy duty galvanised gates in 1993 which are still as good as the day they were bought. In my opinion, the only alternative to mass-produced heavy duty gates are the ones made locally by a competent welder out of blue band galv pipe.

As far as I can see, nothing cheap comes out of any of the big coop stores. Their only motivation is getting up profit and share price. Buy low sell high.
They give min possible price for milk, and they charge max possible for goods they sell to the farmer. Them buckos on the board, give themselves nice fat bonuses:cool:
Did a bit of fencing recently. 8 foot strainers €8.60 at my local independent store. Looked at the local coop ............. €9.85 for 7 foots ... no 8 foots in stock.
Bet the price difference on 15 foot gate might be upwards of €30 :pac::pac:

tora, i agree. the prices of the local shops, (not co-op) are reflective of value shopping around. they could sell at 30 euro cheaper, but why go more than 15?

bought them sandy gates before, same old story. i need to buy 3 or 4 gates before winter though.

I've gradually replaced most of my gates with good quality galvanised ones from an outfit called Atlanticstratford who trade on e-bay but you can pick up all their stuff at their depot. They do really good quality gates in a very big range of sizes at very keen prices. I reckon they are up to 40% cheaper than anything I've seen around the Monghan area. Problem is of course that they are based in Stratford on Avon, England but if anyone, like me, does regular trips back and forth it's well worth taking a look at what they have - just go to e-bay and put in Atlanticstratford. I've brought all my gates
( widest is a 14 foot) over on the roof of a Volvo Estate. Mayber there's the makings of a little business here!!

It all depends on the steel that goes into them, the quality of the welding and the type of coating. Its very hard to say whats cheap and whats expensive! if you buy cheap gates, they are usually cheap for a reason!

Buy them off some one who you can trust, they will work out cheaper in the long run!

The man who scans for me said " There's one good thing about **acker* gates, you'd never be stuck for a stick to drive on a cow"

I've been buying galvanised gates from the co-op the last 10 yrs. Can't complain but you do need to shop around.
