Old beloved worn dress

I am not sure if I am in the right forum.

I have a dress that I love....bought in Dunnes....was €45 not expensive but I truely love it.It is one of those items that makes you feel good and always fits like a glove. I should have bought 3 of them at the time.

Problem is its gone all bobbly and is getting a bit shabby and worn looking but I can't part with it. I do use the bobble off to get control the bobbles but I am loosing that battle.

Now I am thinking of taking it apart and trying to make another one from it. Now I have no experience of this but I would be well able to take a pattern a make a dress out of it. I am handy with sowing machine and using patterns.

But not sure how or if it can be done from taking the dress apart or is it advisable to take my loved dress apart try and cut a pattern from it and make a new one from it?

Need help, am I mad, is there people that could do this for me and would it be expensive??

    Advise and comments welcome???

Perhaps a word with the dressmakers in Arts & Crafts might garner better responses but I'll leave this here as I'm sure a few of the regulars have taken up the needle on occasion.

A dressmaker would do this for you but the rates depend on the work involved, your location and who you hire. I did this once and made the mistake of changing the fabric. Maybe post in your regions forum to find a recommended dressmaker close to you.

It can be done, but it depends how much shaping it has. If it is a Dunnes dress you might find that the pieces do not sit right when you have taken it apart. Everything would be significant, the type of fabric you use, the way the zip is put in. However if the dress is no longer wearable, you don't have too much to lose, so give it a go!

Thanks a million everyone. I will enquire about dressmakers in my area. The material is a jersey type material, I would a similar material but something that would wear better.
    Thanks for your help.....

I think if its jersey there isn't a lot of point. The jersey will have changed as you wore it and although it fits you you will not get the same results from trying to make it up. Your best bet would be to take the dress to a dressmaker and ask her to make on in the same style.

Just randomly watched this video after reading this post earlier and came back to share it with you! It might be the answer to remaking it without having to cut it up? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUF5uHrzzCE&feature=related
