I was in Murcia for a few hours - it seemed nice. Is it the city that you're going to? The first time I went to the Costa Blanca, I thought I was going to Murcia. I flew with Ryanair to a place called San Javier - Ryanair called it Murcia but it's not very near Murcia (and our apartment wasn't near either of those places!).

Depending on how long you are going for, it might be advised to rent a car (though car hire rates are fairly high atm). It'd be about 130ish km (about hour and a half drive) to Benidorm, but it is worth going up for a day to Terra Natura and Terra Mitica (large theme park). You could see if there is a festival on when you are going (Spanish seem fond of their festivals), and attend. They are good to watch. There seem to be a few on in September

I would try and find out where the markets are too, and attend at least one on your visit (probably need a sat nav for this). They tend to be good value for money and you would get clothes you could not get here. Also they sell huuuuge bottles of red wine for like 2/3 euro. And of course, don't forget to try some tapas. Try to go where you see the locals eating, they seem to know the best places.

Murcia is a city and also Murcia is a province. It is unlikely that your friend's villa is near the city which is inland. If you could amplify your destination more helpful advice would be forthcoming.
