How much do you want to spend on accommodation? It's really dirt cheap for most places so staying somewhere nice is easy. I stayed in the 4.5 star Bali Mandira which is in Legian. Thats about 15 mins in a taxi from Kuta which is the main area

Cost was $170 per night for two of us and that includes breakfast and facilities. It is right on the beach as well, basically a stone's throw.

If that's out of your price range the still look at Legian cause the location is perfect.

If you want snorkeling and Beach's go to the Gilis. Paradise!
Kuta is a bit of a dump tbh. Was very disappointed with Bali although I didnt go up the mountains to Ubud which would have been better.

is there any tourist visa needed for Bali? Heading for a week or two at the end of Oct

Xavi, would you reccomend Mandira? Looking for somewhere nice to stay while there with a Hot Tub as a must :)

Kuta is the biggest dump I've seen in an awful long time. Was there at Christmas and there were thousands, I mean thousands, of dead fish washing up on the shore the whole way along the beach.

Wherever you stay, take a trip down to a place called Nasa Dua. Sit in a cafe and watch the surf. Beautiful. It's about 25 mins motorbike ride from Kuta, southbound.

totally agree with other posters, BALI is not what you would expect it to be. Ubud is nice if you like the crafty scene, but Kuta is really unpleasant, the beach is constantly filthy, full of wrappers and plastic bags, nusa dua is nice, but really jank is right, the Gili islands are incredible in comparison, Gili trawangan is the biggest, and from a party point of view, the most fun, and its incredibly cheap, really would reccommend it over BALI.
You can get a fast boat very easily or take a slow boat from the north east coast, either is pretty painless, and well worth the (small) hassle
