Have just been chatting with a buddy of mine re the ole Tip-ex on a timing belt casing. Do you trust that the timing belt has actually been done when you purchase your new (2nd hand) car? I often wonder if its been done at all. Now i know most of you will say NO i dont trust it but be honest...

No, I don't. Even if the belt was done at the tipp-exed mileage, there's no way of knowing how long ago that was, or whether the tensioners & water pump were done at the same time. It's just not worth the risk, IMO.

Tip-Ex is cheaper than a timing belt.

Well if its been done recently you could always look for fresh tool marks.... Other than that wouldnt trust it on its own I would need to see an invoice for parts used.

I had the opposite a few years back when buying a cheap runabout, there was no mark or evidence that the belt had been done so I used it to knock the price down and managed to knock quite a bit off the price, first thing I did was book it in with my mechanic for a belt and service. When he to do it he spotted the belt, water pump and tensioners were all nearly new.

The guy I bought it from bought it to sell it on, then when he handed over the keys he told me he'd 'lost his bollix' on the car. Lucky for me it was 2 weeks before xmas so he was desperate to sell :)

Point is you don't know and for peace of mind have a mechanic take a look

I've told that to folks a few times, folks love to hear that. Grain of salt and all. He may well have but I wouldn't count on it.

Theres no way of knowing tbh. You can only take peple at their word. I like to buy a car that I know the timing belt needs doing as I have peace of mind so I can get it done myself.
