    Wondering if anyone can help
there is a raging argument going on at the moment between my two very good friends basically they live in a house where the gas heating is connected to the immersion ie both heat up the hot water
if you have both on together is it possible to then blow/break the immersion so that putting on heating is the only way to have hot water?

you could have heating and immersion on together. The immersion or cylinder won't break.

However You would normally only have one on at a time.

thought so however one of them puts the two on together so they get a full bath of hot water :confused::confused: i know
and now the other one is saying that the immersion is broken due to the two being run together

Nope will not break because of that but your energy bills should be interesting... very interesting.

Very wasteful - in most cases the gas boiler will actually heat the entire cylinder in much less time and for less cost than immersion heater.

It's not as bad as people think ,as long as there is some heat in the water ,the electrical immersion works pretty fast.

There is an overheat reset on some immersions. You (with power off and carefully) could remove the cover and press the small button to reset. This may have happened due to the power going to the immersion but the water getting hotter than set temp on immersion (this is caused by the gas boiler on at the same time) which would cause it to trip so technically the friend who said it was not a good idea is correct.

All immersion heaters come with a thermostat built into them. They are normally adjustable and come as factory set to 60C. This is to elimate the risk of legionaires. If your heating is on and not zoned, i.e. when rads, etc are calling for heat, it automatically heats your cylinder, then when the temperature of the water reaches 60C in the cylinder, then the immersion heat will automatically switch off.
Should the immersion thermostat be functioning correctly, there will be no risk of burning either out.
