Our boss is changing his opening hours from 10-6 mon to fri to mon to sat 10-4. he says since there is still 35 hours off each weekend he isn't breaking employment law.Is it possible that we can be forced to work a 6 day week.

Organization of Working Time Act 1997 states that in a 7 day period, employees cannot work more than an average of 48 hours over 4 months. Also, in that period of 7 days, the employee should have a rest period of at least 24 consecutive hours (with exception in Section 13(3) of the 1997 Act).

So, the rest period and working hours are ok.

Although the statutes may be of little use to you, it's possible that your employment contract could specify that you are expected to work no more than 5 days a week (and 6 only in exceptional cases), and you could remind your employer of that. Hopefully you have a copy of it in writing!
