    Hi paulyt33,

High gloss black kitchens are very stylish. Your other option though is to mix black high gloss with another colour or wood type for contrast. All black can sometimes be quite dark so make sure you have a bright kitchen to put it in.

As for the worktops, go with a contrasting light colour in granite or quartz if the budget allows.

Something like this two tone kitchen is really nice.

Hi Have a high gloss black kitchen, its a U shaped one with an island and the presses on either side of the kitchen and 3 sides of the island are black and the middle row of presses and drawers in island are high gloss white. We also have stainless steeel roller shutters on two sides. Our countertop is the black quartz with silver flecks in it so the kitchen is a fairly modern design and it works perfectly. If it was all black it would definately be too dark but its reflective material as it is so it does bounce light......however as much as i adore my kitchen and i spent months designing it, its a nightmare to keep the black clean, the white is a dream to clean but the black needs a lot of attention to make sure its not streaky. Unless somebody else can tell me the best way to clean it!!
I would say go for it but make sure its two tone, pick another colour to go with it but be careful because i found some of the modern wood units can look a bit cheap you need to make sure its a good quality wood you match with it if thats the road you go down.

There are a one or two things I agree with kikililly on. The black is hard to keep clean because it is high gloss and being dark the marks show up.

With regards the modern wood units looking cheap, they only look cheap if they are low budget vinyl doors. The picture I posted as a reference shows a high quality veneer polished door which really looks the part.

Adding natural wood into a modern kitchen is a really hot trend at the moment. It adds warmth and a bit of character to the kitchen.

Oh no don't get me wrong I agree with you, the wood and high gloss mix is gorgeous but you really have to be careful that its a good quality wood you pick or it'll ruin the look on you.

Thanks for the advice , the thought of the black hi gloss smearing has turned my wife of the idea  and on to high gloss cream , the same question applies to this , a suitable worktop ,
I think a dark wood be it wenga or walnut or a dark hi gloss laminate ,

again any suggestions and thanks in advance ....

Well either a nice contrasting timber (Walnut, Iroko, Oak, Wenge) or a light coloured quartz would look great. Not everybody takes to the idea of the light coloured worktop with a light door, but it is actually a really sharp, clean contemporary look. You can always try and use a secondary worktop material as maybe a breakfast bar or island top if you have a large enough room. See the pic below, it is a small champagne hi-gloss kitchen I did, and works very well. (IMHO of course) However, my customers had existing oak floors they wanted to keep, so this colour helped.

On the subject of higloss laminate worktops... I am not a fan at all. They are terrible for maintainence. They scratch very easily, anything can do it. Even as simple as throwing your keys on the worktop as you come in the door. There are some lovely contemporary tops from the likes of duropal, in matte and textured finishes. These will be better for wear, and look great. (I especially like their wenge, and olive wood tops, with upstands)

    Hope this helps! :)

I think KevArno is right. Look at the photographs he posted. The high gloss cream with the light coloured quartz worktops is a really lovely look. And if quartz is out of your budget range then you will find a lovely laminate worktop.

Really lovely kitchen by the way KevArno. Where are you based?

    Thats a gorgeous kitchen!!!!
Don't suppose you remember what brand the fridge was? Sorry for butting in!

    Thanks guideanna & Kitchen Expert.

@ guideanna - the fridge and the huge double oven are both Fisher & Paykel appliances. Both great appliances, with huge capacity.

@ Kitchen Expert - I'm based just outside Trim, Meath.

Back on topic, I think you could have a compromise with the darker colour being introduced as a spot door, just to lift the lighter primary colour. I have just finished a kitchen using a latte coloured hi gloss as the main colour, with an island in a dark streaky ebony hi gloss. It looks fantastic, and is a great compromise. The streaky timber grain in the ebony helps to hide any of the smears that would normally appear on a dark gloss door. I'll try get some pics when the granite is fitted.

A friend of mine got a new kitchen last year and she has cream matt presses, very contemporary and a walnut worktop with large square polished porceline tiles and I have to say it is just spectacular, way easier to keep clean than mine and really bright and spacious looking. I personally prefer the contrast of the light and dark. My mam also did a revamp of her kitchen and simply gave the presses a fresh lick of white paint and she bought an oak countertop which again is beautiful with the pale polished porceline.

Right so I got a couple of very rough shots of that completely unfinished kitchen today... just be aware that it is very much a work in progress as far as painting, electrics, and appliances are concerned. The worktops will be a granite, and are being cut as I type.
But I still thought it would help you out to see how it can work...

Ok so the shots are very rough, but I will post the finished room when all work is completed. Hope they aren't too big...

Edit: I realise my statement about finishing this kitchen were a little premature earlier, but I meant cabinetry. Granite and other work are being done by 3rd partys so I am at their mercy regarding final photos!

They have a really nice black gloss kitchen in Ikea. I'm not sure of the quality there compared to other places (probably much lower)... but just for an example it may be worth checking out.
