In light of recent posts, I thought it would be a good idea to try and gather any interesting posts regarding starting off/next steps etc. all together in one thread.

One site I used *a lot* was the BBC introducing music.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/introducing/advice/

It has probably everything you should know, unfortunately written from a UK perspective, so there's some stuff that wouldn't be relevant to us .ie people

And you shouldn't EVEN CONTEMPLATE getting into music as a career without reading Steve Albini's, The Problem With Music

    http://www.negativland.com/albini.html

I'll add more to the thread as I come across them. If you want to add links feel free. I would like to keep actual discussion away from this thread, so if you have a problem, with say, the Albini Article, please feel free to start a new thread about it, with a title like, "Regarding Steve Albini's "The Problem with Music""

I've been very impressed with how this forum really does have it's regulars and excellent contributors. Instead of the *drummer/guitarist/bassist wanted forum it once was. And I can see some lively debates happening with these articles!

    Thanks for that,

    Papa.

I haven't read all of this author's blogs (there's loads) but it does have a good dose of useful advice for aspiring bands and artists, who might only be reading about all this stuff for the very first time.

    Main things id say:

    1. Listen to people who know what they are talking about.
    2. Listen to criticism and take it on board in a constructive manner. Dont just ignore it.
    3. Be open to suggestions from producers/engineers about your music. They are an independant ear and are there to try and improve the song.
    4. Practice your fingers to the bone. Get the bass and drums playing like clockwork. A solid rythmn section ads a huge amount to a band and a messy one stands out badly.
    5. Dont listen to any hype surrounding you. Too many bands have a load of mates that love their music and so they think they are rockstars.
    6. Be friendly and supportive to other bands. A bigger act is more likely to offer a support/tour to a band they like and get along with, rather than a band with great music that they dont gel with.

Thats my 2 cents anyway :)
