New (2nd hand) car purchase - advice

    Hi all,

I will be looking to buy a new car in the next 6 weeks or so. I will be purchasing (and living) in the UK, but probably returning to Ireland in 18 months or so.

Anyway as my previous two cars have been purchased from family (99 Ford Focus; 01 Hyundai Accent), this is essentially my first time choosing my own car. I am looking for advice on what to go for.

My budget is about 6000-7000 GBP (7000-8000 euro). My main priorities are reliability (not having to pump much money into the car over the next 3 years or so); fuel efficiency; and after these would be it being a good looking car etc.

The cars I like the look of at the moment (but don;t know much about their reliability etc) would be the Focus, Civic, VW Golf and Audi A3 or A4. I would be clueless as to whether getting a slightly older Golf or a much older Audi with a bit more mileage would be a better deal than a newer, less mileage Civic or Focus.

Anyway, any advice is much appreciated.
