I know Maplins are usually a rip off. Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this system? Is there better value elsewhere? Would those night cameras be any good at 20m? Has anyone used one of these before? Can you recommend anything better in the same price range? They are selling these for €379 here.

Four High Quality CCD 420TVL weatherproof cameras with IR night vision
Not great quality, would be looking for 520-540 TVL

    Nightvision upto 20m
But it does not specify the lux level.
    Recording Frame Rate PAL:100fps@CIF 25fps@D1, 50fps@HD1,NTSC:30fps@D1, 60fps@HD1,120fps@CIF
This is good for the price.
After that its really down to what features the software has, and ofcourse make sure it uses digital watermarking. CCTV is really pointless for any sort of evidence without that.

Does this mean anything to you,its from the pdf linked from the maplin page:

    1. 1/4” Color CCD Cameras
    2. Built-in 24 LED, IR distance up to 20 meters
    3. 420 TV Lines
    4. Weatherproof (IP66)
    5. Illumination: 0Lux (IR ON)

    Min Illumination 0 LUX /F1.2

    Missed that..
That basically say it works in the dark with IR on.
I'd be looking for a lux level without IR of 0.001

A lot of cameras will quote unrealistic min lux levels of .0002 lux etc but what they are not telling you is how they achieve this.
In the cheap cameras they achieve this by slowing the shutter speed right down to allow as much light as possible on to the ccd chip.
Result is ghosting, blurred pictures and overall rubbish picture when you have any movement
