Hi I am currently in the middle of interrailing around Europe, started in Berlin and am currently in Budapest until Thursday, have gone thru Prague and Vienna.

Eventually I will reach Lake Bled and Ljubljana but I have 2 days in between to fill and was wondering if anyone could advise me on where to go to in the meantime, it doesn't necessarily have to be a city.

    Thanks

We went straight from Budapest to Ljubljana last year, it's a 9 or 10 hour journey but we just couldn't pick out anywhere I wanted to spend time in in between. We'd already seen Prague, Krakow and Vienna.
Budapest was worth 3 days, might have spent an extra day in it, and Ljubljana is definitely worth the 2 days we spent there if not more. You can always chop and change your plans to extend your stay in one place or shorten your time in another.
I suppose Maribor or Zagreb are the obvious choices, they're both on or near the route between Budapest and Ljubljana. I've no experience of either, but I did a little research on Zagreb before heading off last summer in anticipation of stopping there. It's supposed to be a nice enough sort of spot but nowhere near as picturesque as Ljubljana, maybe a little more industrialised and dull in the outskirts. Then again, not many cities east or west of the iron curtain that didn't have a dull concrete side to them.

We spent a night in Zagreb in between the two. It was fairly ****e. Seems the whole of Croatia heads to the coast for the summer and there wasn't much going on there. Head to Ljubljana for an extra day I'd say, great spot.

I'd agree. Very little of interest between the two. Slovenia is a a great spot, in addition to Lake Bled, there is loads of tours out of Ljubljana, visit the limestone caves, go mountain biking, rock climbing, white water rafting. All very good value compared to Ireland.

I don't know if this has changed but when we went, there was no restaurant or pass through food and drink cart on the train. We had a couple of cans of beer before we got on the train, polished off a few more, only to discover this fact. Arrived in Ljubljana dehydrated, very hungry and incredibly ill-tempered. Them two kebabs I devoured upon arrival were one of finest meals I have ever eaten.
