Or €61 for 1tb external drive on amazon with free delivery, plus western digital are one of the most reliable hard drive producers out there!

Great drive indeed I got one last month but the Aldi one has an eSATA port and the WD one only has usb.

i've read that some people have had issues with the new-generation Elements drive. it's not recognised in the computer for some people and there's some issues with the cable not fitting in right or the cable jack breaking or something. someone mentioned this in another hard drive thread in BA. just want ye to be aware of this. there's some mention of it in some of the reviews on amazon (or another Elements product)
€61 though. i'd be tempted to buy it if i didn't already have an 1TB Elements drive (older model though) :D

Aye tis a great drive, but is the eSata port worth the extra €30? Doubt it :pac:

Wonder what the warranty on the aldi one is ?
I stopped buying western digital after I had two disks fail just outside the warranty (12 months).

I have original Elements and love it. Uses standard USB connector cable. My mate here in work got newer one and WD have stupidly switched to a their own cable which is NOT the standard one!! If you loose it or it breaks you are scrwed!!

This is really not a bargain alert at all, infact it is very expensive for the price and quality.

    Expensive for the price?

The quality is moot - we don't know the drive manufacturer yet - though it's likely to be a Seagate drive if last year's Medion externals are anything to go by.

Is the free delivery to the Republic achieved using the Belfast postcode?

I don't think it is either, but you're not comparing like for like.

    Is it USB powered perhaps?

i doubt it. most 1TB drives need an external power supply. also if it was USB-powered i'd say that aldi would have said that to promote it.

indeed they do! time for someone to dig out the receipt maybe? :)

nope, not on a 3.5" drive.

only the 2.5" laptop sized usb drives are bus powered, you'll need external power for any 3.5" external drive.

    There's a 1.5TB drive for €92 HERE

Surely that's a better buy than the aldi one?

Picked up the Aldi one today. Slots nicely into the Medion HD slot on top of the PC (main reason I bought it over another brand), is practically silent and nice and fast.

    Happy.

Early 1.5TB drives actually contained two 750GB drives inside the enclosure. Having two drives doubles your chances of a failure, and either drive failing causes the other to be useless as well. So they literally had half the reliability of a single drive unit.

I don't know if this is still the case or if 1.5TB drives are all single drive units now. (this was the case with early 1TB drives also, but I think they are all single drive units by now)

I got the WD Elements 1TB a couple of months ago from Amazon.
No frills, no software, no fancy blue LED lighting underneath etc. but seems rock solid. Dead quiet and seems very fast (haven't actually tested it for speed). Neat little wall-plug type power supply (i.e. not a brick). USB cable is the bog-standard one with a mini-USB on the drive end.

Got fed up with the portable ones - they always seems to die in the end - and/or the mini-USB socket comes loose and you have to buy a box for them.

Same here. It works well, is quiet and uses the NORMAL USB connections not some propitiatory crap that if you loose the cable or it gets broken the drive is useless!!

My WD drive just arrived from Amazon this morning, ordered Tuesday evening. Emptying my laptop on to it now. Pretty good value.

Maxburns have the best deals external drives.

    e66 in store price for a Hitachi 1TB 3 1/2"

Seagate TB 2 1/2" drives are available at Maxburns on the Belgard Road Tallaght for under e100 now. (Not ion their list yet but I believe in stock)

Why get something that weighs a ton and requires mains when you can get something that could fit in your shirt pocket and is powered from USB for an extra e10.

Maplins are selling a 2 TB external drive for 140 euro.

Cheaper if you work it out and a Seagate - I have an older one for years and no problems with it.

Harvey Normans were doing a Seagate 2TB one last week for €99.
Don't know if they are still doing it.

Picked this up, transferring to it now.
Was surprised when I was charged only 69.99 for it. Price tag still says 89.99

1 TB for 70 quid, no waiting for delivery...am chuffed. It does use an AC cable though, not USB powered.

It's been reduced in all stores, picked up the last one in Claremorris this evening.

I'm a fan of these aldi drives. €70 for 1TB with e-sata connection. I've three, one for over a year, and no problems at all.
