the taxidermist would have to log it and inform there local wild life ranger .

if someone finds a dead animal like an owl or a pinemartin or any such protected animal, can they have it stuffed.
my mate hit a pine martin in his car, killed it,but left it at side of road. but when he rang me and told me,i said go back and pick it up and get it stuffed. he would cos he reckoned it was illegal!
    is that the case?

hear is one for you .

if the pine martin was taking its last breath it would be ok to take it off the roadside , if it was dead it it illegal to do so .

i picked up one last year it was hit by a car in front of me and just dead as i picked it up ;).

i rang a ranger friend of mine ,to say what happened and i will most likely get it mounted .she said the above .

i was getting a pike mounted last year there were pinemartins in the place waiting be collected,he said as long as there not shot or trapped its ok as its illegal shoot r trap them.if he even suspects anything illegal had killed it he wont do them as sometimes people come to inspect his freezers and if something was off he would be in trouble

I was told to write a letter explaining how you came by it and get local ranger to countersign it.

As stated if it looks like it was killed illegally the taxidermist would report it to the ranger and it would be investigated etc etc

Under EU regulations you would need a cert. under DEFRA to have the bird in your possession.

The snowy owl in under CITES ANNEX A category.

If the bird is mounted & you're buying it the seller / taxidermist should provide the relevant paperwork with sale.

Applications are required for CITES listed species for the following activities

    1. Import into and (Re) Export from the European Union
The commercial use of any specimen listed on Annex A to the regulations within the EU

    2. Movement of specimens within the EU where there has been a previous movement restriction imposed

If you are not sure whether a species is controlled by CITES you should check this first. You will need the scientific name, and can find out using the resources on our CITES Species page.

To apply for a CITES controlled species you will need an application form. The different forms can be found here. Charges apply to some applications. See more details here.

You will need to check any specific requirements with the intended import/export country. You can find out on the Global Cites site here.

You should also check whether there is a trade ban with the country or the species you wish to trade with. You can use the WCMC Species Database for this.

Does UK legislation (DEFRA) count here ?

If it's in the country already I doubt you need to worry about import/export licences?

If I was getting it from someone/somewhere I'd want a letter/receipt stating how/where they came by it to cover my arse .................. ?

    is that the case?

Although it may sound ridicilous JW SHOOTER is correct in his reply.......if you find it dead you, according to rangers, should leave it there but if alive & died while you were there you could keep it!!!!

I was told by ranger that you shouldn't keep any birds of prey / protected mammals etc. found dead on the road. When queried he said that if a person saw the bird / mammal being hit & killed and had reg. of car / wintness then they could keep it. Or if they knocked it down themselves & had witnesses. If not leave it there

Their logic is that the bird / animal may have been shot, staggered to edge of road & died.

I pointed out that it seemed to be an awful waste to leave beautiful birds / mammals rot on the side of the road due to collision just because you found the bird and didn't witness it's death.

I do taxidermy part-time (hard to get the time for it) and had a sparrow hawk stuffed when the ranger came to inspect. 1,001 questions - checked log book to see owners name / address. The owner was a falconer who's sparrow hawk died in a collision with ESB wires. He took the carbon copy page from the log book & left to check story with falconer.

If anybody asks me to do a protected species I check how they got it...road kill etc. & inform them that during skinning if bullet / pellets found the ranger will have to be contacted to inspect. All name / address / contact details are kept in the log book for NPWS rangers to inspect.

I often wonder what would happen if some unscrupulous shooter took a pot shot at a buzzard etc., wounding it.....if the bird then, while flying over a road, fell & was hit by a car. If the person in the car picked it up & brought it to be mounted would they be in trouble when pellets were discovered??????
    l
Incidently, I've to record in the log book jackdaws, magpies, rooks & greycrows mounted & give a reason for having them in my possession / how killed / reason for killing etc. as they are all PROTECTED SPECIES !!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of looking at a dead snowny owl on your mantlepiece, head up to Blacksod (on the bog) Belmullet peninsula during the winter. There is a female Snowny owl who has being wintering there for the last couple of years:)

Apprently it's also bad luck to have a stuffed owl of any type in the house as well.

I have a barn owl mounted it's about five or six years old now,
When I went to the taxidermist I needed a xray from the vet to prove there was no shot in it (cost €50)
Then I had to get a letter from the wildfowl reserve in Wexford to say they were happy enough to let me keep it.
I had to make a donation to them for the letter €20 as far as I can remember.
It was knocked down by an icecream truck which was handy because when I got it it was already frozen :D
